About this deal

This is a weird book and, to be honest, probably one I wouldn't have finished reading if I weren't reviewing it. While it tells the story of Suleyman, the focus is really more on the rise and fall of his right hand man and the relationship between Venice and the Ottoman Empire, as I think as much space is given to the Gritti (the older one the Doge, the younger his illegitimate son) as the emperor himself. This meant that I felt as though I came away from this book knowing much more about the personality of those three than I did about Suleyman. Lion House is perfectly situated, we loved exploring Ashbourne, the park, the shops, and the river."

Freshen up in the bathroom on the first floor which houses a bath with an overhead shower, noticing the eye for detail in the lion motif within the basin. Extremely well equipped to a very high standard with luxury extras. Ideal location with local amenities one minute walk away.Richard Seifert’s landmark Grade II-listed Centre Point tower was once described by Eduardo Paolozzi as London’s first Pop Art building. Certainly the deeply modelled honeycomb of its white cast-concrete façade can at times look like an animated Bridget Riley Op Art painting as the sun moves around it. There is so much to do all within about an hours drive. It was so hot when we were there we hit the beaches. Our favourite was South Milton Sands but Shaldon (Ness Cove) came a close second. Take the stairs up to the first floor holding onto the rope handrail as you go and passing the quaint porthole window at the top of the stairs before coming to the spacious master bedroom, boasting a super-king-size bed, a TV and antique furnishings. For all its finesse, this still inevitably feels somewhat like an office conversion – if a very high-end one. Indeed with the rather sombre monochromatic colour scheme carried throughout in finishes and materials, a splash or two more of Mad Men colour might have more successfully invoked the spirit of the 60s. But this is a very effectively realised conversion which will undoubtedly form the heart of the area’s revitalisation. Boasting a superb position in the market town of Ashbourne and within striking distance of the majestic Peak District National Park, is the elegant retreat, Lion House.

There was plenty of space in the living and sleeping areas. The accomodation was top class and upto the usual Sykes standards. Bellaigue pulls out two characters in the Sublime Porte of Suleyman the Magnificent to describe the Ottoman Empire's efforts to subjugate Hungary and Transylvania in the late 16th Century.Close to all amenities in Ashbourne- we sampled many of the fabulous local cafes and there are some lovely little shops to mooch in close by. The kitchen is georgeous and well equipped (thought a few more forks would be conviinient). The only thing you have to get used to is the AGA, a very special hearth/oven not easy to cook with for the uninformed. Europeans feared Suleyman, as they feared rule by the “heathen” Muslims, and he was after all the leader of Islam. At one time or another, many European states entered into coalitions to hold him off. But for decades one man stood above all the others as Suleyman’s nemesis: the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Suleyman possessed a single ally in Europe: his trading partner, the city-state of Venice. But Venice was forever vulnerable to pressure from Charles and the French king and was, at best, an indifferent ally. From a distance of five hundred years, it seems as though the sultan was destined to fail. For those looking to explore, you will find miles of walks upon the Peak District National Park, where you will find the Dovedale valley and the peak of Thorpe Cloud.

Needed weekend accommodation in centre of Ashbourne & this was perfect for our needs - spacious, clean & comfortable."Viorst, Milton. "Salt Lake City: The Founder Is Palpably Present", The New York Times, 26 September 1976. Retrieved on 2 April 2021. It was absolutely wonderful. So much space, and all the items in the house that you could want, including toilet roll, kitchen roll, washing up liquid, etc. The quaint streets of Moretonhampstead make a charming setting for your holiday to Devon, with lots of independent shops, restaurants and pubs to frequent, along with being just a stone's throw from beautiful countryside scenery.
