About this deal

You won’t have the usual excuse for missing the great flash shot you almost had if you use this new, mechanically fired, four-shot flashcube. One word of caution — even in their prime, Magicubes were known to occasionally actually explode, showering your subject with shards of glass. Manuals from the time period suggest standing at least 5 feet from your subject to protect against this, and the bulbs themselves are coated in plastic to try and avoid flying shards. Four flash shots in five seconds is mighty fast. In addition to this, four shots should prove adequate for most sequence situations. If not, a second flashcube can be inserted with very little time lag and then you are set for another four flash shots. This tiny explosion would light the zirconium foil, which in a few milliseconds would reach a blinding, sun-like brightness, properly exposing your film. Because film has a non-linear response to light, it’s hard to overexpose it. So Magicubes could be extremely bright, without having to worry about the blown-out highlights you’d get with digital. In general, Instamatic cameras could only really perform well in partial shade to full sunlight. Otherwise, their aperture/film speed combo practically guaranteed underexposure. These were cameras for sunny, light-filled vacation snaps. They weren’t designed for taking pictures in low light settings.

Kodak Instamatic Camera with flashcube ( By Karsten11 (Own work) [Public domain], via Wikimedia Commons) Ivan Tolmachev (19 January 2011). "A Brief History of Photographic Flash". Https. This way one can take four images using a flashcube. A flashcube was a module with four expendable flashbulbs, each mounted at 90° from the others in its own reflector. For use it was mounted atop the camera with an electrical connection to the shutter release and a battery inside the camera. After each flash exposure, the film advance mechanism also rotated the flashcube 90° to a fresh bulb. This arrangement allowed the user to take four images in rapid succession before inserting a new flashcube. Geomag Pro-L is the evolution of the original Geomag magnetic construction system. Designed for those who love a challenge, the Pro-L line allows you to create more complex models and structures thanks to the greater strength of the magnets.Einstein – User Manual/Operation Instructions" (PDF). In the past, slow-burning single-use flash bulbs allowed the use of focal-plane shutters at maximum speed because they produced continuous light for the time taken for the exposing slit to cross the film gate. If these are found they cannot be used on modern cameras because the bulb must be fired *before* the first shutter curtain begins to move (M-sync); the X-sync used for electronic flash normally fires only when the first shutter curtain reaches the end of its travel. The largest flashbulb, the mammoth GE Mazda Type 75, was initially developed to be used as a source of light for night time aerial photography during world war II. The Mazda 75 measured over eight inches long and had a girth of over four inches.

After 50 years in a box, though, you can’t trust these safety measures. So I would advise standing very far away from your subject, or photographing non-living things. Also, be aware that Magicubes are blindingly bright. Don’t look right at them, and avoid photographing people if your subjects are sensitive to light. Unlike flashbulbs, the intensity of an electronic flash can be adjusted on some units. To do this, smaller flash units typically vary the capacitor discharge time, whereas larger (e.g., higher power, studio) units typically vary the capacitor charge. Color temperature can change as a result of varying the capacitor charge, making color correction necessary. Constant-color-temperature flash can be achieved by using appropriate circuitry. [17] Kodak has designed a whole new line of easy-to-use Instamatic cameras to accept these Flashcubes. All you do is pop on a Sylvania Blue Dot Flashcube, and shoot.

Hannavy, John (2013). Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography. Routledge. pp.–84. ISBN 978-1-135-87327-1. You can take 4 flash pictures with one Cube. After a picture is taken, the Cube is automatically rotated to the next bulb. Instantly. This lets you take all 4 in as little as 5 seconds to get picture sequences that used to get away. Vintage flashcubes: Now take 4 pictures without changing bulbs – Sylvania Blue Dot Flashcube, a revolution in flash picture taking (1965) In 1965 Eastman Kodak of Rochester, New York replaced the individual flashbulb technology used on early Instamatic cameras with the Flashcube developed by Sylvania Electric Products. [11] [12]The time available to fire a single flash which uniformly illuminates the image recorded on the sensor is the exposure time minus the shutter travel time. Equivalently, the minimum possible exposure time is the shutter travel time plus the flash duration (plus any delays in triggering the flash). Since the flashcubes advanced automatically along with film advance, there was no need to wait in between the shots. This was a lot faster compared to the previous flash methods. Since each flashcube could help with four shots, there was no need to carry a large number of flashbulbs. For example, a 12 exposure roll of film needed only 3 flashcubes.
