Stakes Is High deals with many topics, including the state of hip-hop, the commercialization of hip-hop culture, and criticism of gangsta rap. Comprised of various labels we know and love at Rough Trade (Bella Union, ATO, Speedy Wunderground, Phantasy, Heavenly, Mute and more) PIAS [Recordings] filter through some of the most diverse artistry to our racks, which we greatly enjoy digging into. But man, they cut out so many skits, even small ones and if you've listened to this as originally intended its a little strange to not hear them in between the songs. As the meaning behind their label name suggests (a rough translation from Spanish as 'hill view') Loma Vista has climbed to the summit of today's musical landscape, engaging and representing a sweeping range of the most popular scenes and genres of today.

The streaming version of the album divides "The Bizness" into two tracks, "The Bizness" and "Yunonstop". The clip at the end of the final track, "Sunshine", closes the album with a young man saying "Yo, when I first heard 3 Feet High and Rising, I was" and then the clip is cut out in similar fashion to " Fight the Power" in Public Enemy's legendary album, Fear of a Black Planet. This pressing has great low end, only rating four stars because most of the skits that appear on the album are missing to cram all the songs on here. A routinely great artist, much of Sufjan's universal appeal comes from his skills as a gifted narrator, pairing personal musings on love and devotion with commentary on American culture, whilst welding folk and electronica, the ambient and existential.Super dirty and had some “baked in” crap that caused loud pops until I carefully cleaned both discs. Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. His full length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm.
