They were likely founded in Small Heath, possibly by a man named Thomas Mucklow, as suggested by a newspaper article entitled, "A murderous outrage at Small Heath, a man's skull fractured" (printed in the 24 March 1890 edition of The Birmingham Mail). There was a lot of “X was arrested for this and charged X amount” which made me feel like the synopsis and marketing of the book was highly misleading. This honest and brutal account, straight from Britain’s most notorious gangsters is both an interesting look at the 1960s and the gang warfare that pervaded London. Knowing some of the songs well, I can confirm that the lyrics definitely fit in with the action and I will never not think of Tommy when I hear The Last Shadow Puppets’ Bad Habits). Read the official companion book, test your knowledge, and create your own cocktails as you become a true Peaky Blinders expert on the plots, the characters, the making of the show and the true stories that inspired the series.

I could have forgiven this lack of editing if it had been self-published, but the editors should have done a much better job and have not, in my opinion, done this book justice. I really enjoyed this short book and I would suggest reading it to anyone who enjoys the series and wants to know more and see characters from the page jump out at you on the tv screen.An interesting account of the real life peaky blinders and the slogging gangs of late 19th and early 20th Century Birmingham, with an eye opener to the true crimes and power struggles of illegal betting and protection rackets.
