About this deal

A great way of introducing young readers to the realities of WWI. Look out for Morpurgo’s other war fiction including Friend or Foe, Waiting for Anya, King of the Cloud Forests and An Eagle in the Snow. Michael Murpurgo writes wonderful children's novels and I had loved some of his books very much and War Horse is one of those books that leaves a lasting impression. I loved the way Joey the horse seemed to give hope to the men on the battlefield and while war was all around them the horses gave the soldiers a sense of calm and hope. Supporters still play a crucial role in Brooke's work - our success stories show the incredible changes that each and every supporter has enabled. If you'd like to get involved in this support, take a look at our fundraising ideas or make a donation today. Every character who was mentioned in the book was in its own way important and showed a particular view on life and the war. Every single character actually loved and appreciated the horses, everyone cared!

It is the onset of the First World War, and the British army is buying horses for the front; Albert's father takes Joey to market and sells him to an honorable soldier called Captain Nicholls. Too late, Albert rushes to market and is unable to reverse the sale. He tries to join the army with Joey but is too young, so he promises Joey that, as soon as he is of age to enlist, he will go and find the beloved animal. Captain Nicholls promises to take great care of Joey and also to keep in touch with Albert.Soon, however, Germans pass by their farm, and take away the horses to pull their artillery wagon. The two meet Friedrich, who befriends them and tries to care for them, growing to love Topthorn and telling them that he did not want to be a soldier. Joey and Topthorn are two of the last few survivors of the artillery-pulling team. One day, after drinking water with Joey, Topthorn dies from heart failure. The Allied artillery starts shelling right after the Germans and Friedrich is killed. After seeing an Allied tank for the first time, Joey runs in terror and is wounded by barbed wire before breaking free. Both the Allied and German soldiers see the wounded Joey in no-man's-land, and a British soldier wins possession of him by flipping a coin with a German soldier and winning. However, their few minutes of friendly peace create a bond between the two before they separate. War Horse has also been turned into a movie. The screenplay was written by Richard Curtis and Lee Hall, and it was directed by Steven Spielberg. It was released on 25th December 2011. I think Joey, the horse was really brave and so was Albert. Joey and Albert had a really good friendship and it was heart-warming to read about. World War I was not just horrible, but gave the word "horrible" a whole new dimension. There are many accounts out there but reading about such a scale of pain and suffering is never easy, no matter if the facts are conveyed in a non-fiction book or through fictionalized accounts. This book is no different. Add to that the fact that it is from an animal's perspective and you might understand why I cried so hard as seldomly before. The writing is simple and yet intricately detailed, every landscape comes to life and the people as well as animals are wonderfully portrayed with the appropriate layers to their personality traits.

A Welsh version of the novel, adapted by Casia Wiliam and titled Ceffyl Rhyfel, was published by Gwasg Carreg Gwalch in 2010. [17] Further information [ edit ] War Horse is a book that everyone is familiar with. However, you may not be aware that Michael Morpurgo’s story about a friendship between a boy and his horse Joey, set in the First World War, has now been adapted into a picture book.

Warhorse is a moving story about a horse called Joey and his experiences during service in the first world war. Joey a farmhorse is sold to the army and witnesses battle from both side of the trenches. With his wife, Morpurgo had founded Farms for City Children, a charity where inner city children live and work on rural farms for a week. [4] Interviewed by Fi Glover on Saturday Live on BBC Radio 4 in December 2010, Morpurgo recounted the event that convinced him he could write the book: It was one of the few books I read that was actually about WWI. Since so many books are about the Second World War I was very intrigued about a book that pictured the First one! A man named Ted Narracott buys a colt for 30 guineas when he was supposed to buy a horse for plough at an auction. Ted's son, Albert, names the horse Joey and grows to love him, protecting him when Ted is drunk. While with the Narracotts, Joey also meets Zoey, a horse who was a source of comfort to him, and whose name partially inspired his.
