About this deal

Liz: An important thing is to trust your instincts – and trust your writing. With Aisha’s book, she felt that the magical element needed to change – which meant quite a lot of reworking – so it was a really brave decision to trust that feeling and go for it. Only you know the story you want to write. Another more practical thing is to push through on a first draft – it’s really easy to start second guessing yourself and want to edit as you go, but try to just write through to the end. The shaping and rethinking comes afterwards – and we’re there to help with that! She starts to explore her mother's past through a magical game. You almost can smell the perfume and feel the heat of Kuwait on your skin through this book. It's freaking beautiful. The way it explores her grief and need for understanding. The way it explores how she wants to save her mum. I adore the development of friendship in this. I love the ending! Safiya and her mum have never seen eye to eye. Her mum doesn’t understand Safiya’s love of gaming and Safiya doesn’t think they have anything in common. As Safiya struggles to fit in at school she wonders if her mum wishes she was more like her confident best friend Elle. But then her mum falls into a coma and, when Safiya waits by her bedside, she finds herself in a strange and magical world that looks a bit like one of her games. And there’s a rebellious teenage girl, with a secret, who looks suspiciously familiar …

Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments A member of staff approaches her and Mum’s eyes focus again. ‘No thank you,’ she says when the woman asks if she needs any help. ‘I’m just waiting for my daughter and her friend.’ Then she comments on how lovely the woman’s earrings are and her face lights up as she tells Mum that she made them herself. Soon enough they’re in a full-blown conversation about jewellery-making, even though Mum knows nothing about it. There’s a nervous energy in Safiya – we see her we see an uncertainty in her around school friends but a steady strength in her as a gamer. Her dealings with a certain less than helpful nurse in the hospital and the constantly bottling of her true emotions around Elle’s crass boyfriend are very real. Those emotions are very relatable for teens and adults. The scene in McDonald’s where she spoke up and out for the first time left my cheeks bright red – I was equal part thrilled and anxious for her. How do you see Safiya? Why do you think she may appeal to readers? Ahhhhh I just finished this book, and I am in tears, but it was an absolutely perfect ending. This whole book is so full of heart and magic. Safiya is a 14-year-old girl in London, obsessed with her favorite video game (an imagined one that sounds really fabulous!), splitting her time between her two loving divorced parents and trying to figure out the shifting rules of her relationship with her best friend as well as her increasingly fraught relationship with her mum. They used to have so much fun together, but now they're always at loggerheads and don't seem able to understand each other at all... Every chapter has to have a purpose and progress the story in some way. It’s such a simple piece of advice that has had a huge impact on my writing. Elle and I don’t speak. She just squeezes my arm every few moments. I don’t cry, but my heart is beating so fast I feel like I can’t breathe. Safiya finds herself slipping into another world that is somehow linked to her mother; maybe in that world she can save her? The novel takes nods from the charming worlds of Studio Ghibli and mechanics of RPGs, producing a truly magical adventure.

Perfect for fans of Jacqueline Wilson, Ross Welford and Kiran Millwood-Hargrave. About This Edition ISBN: Selama ibunya dalam kondisi koma inilah Safiya mengalami hal-hal yang magis.

I wanted to write a story about someone who tries to save her mum as a way of coping with her grief, and I wanted to use the format of a classic quest, but in a contemporary setting. At first, Safiya was interested in gaming but it didn’t feature in the memory chapters at all. As I delved further into my edits it became clear that the book would be stronger if I combined her love of gaming with the quest. That’s when I decided to incorporate the video game elements into the memory chapters. The idea didn’t arrive as a cohesive whole, and it didn’t become what it was until a few edits into the journey.

Now I tend to follow authors much more closely than I did. My favourite MG author at the moment is Katherine Rundell; I always look forward to her next publication. I am also really excited to keep on reading Anna James’ and Cat Doyle’s books. It’s Mum’s turn to laugh. ‘ Rapunzel isn’t about hair!’ she says. ‘I’ve never heard something so ridiculous. It’s about freedom, and independence, and exploring the world.’ This young globular cluster can be seen from the southern hemisphere, in the Dorado constellation, which is Portugese for dolphinfish. Usually, globular clusters contain stars which are born at the same time; however, NGC 1805 is unusual as it appears to host two different populations of stars with ages millions of years apart. Observing such clusters of stars can help astronomers understand how stars evolve, and what factors determine whether they end their lives as white dwarfs, or explode as supernovae. The striking difference in star colours is illustrated beautifully in this image, which combines two different types of light: blue stars, shining brightest in near- ultraviolet light, and red stars, illuminated in red and near- infrared. Space telescopes like Hubble can observe in the ultraviolet because they are positioned above Earth’s atmosphere, which absorbs most of this wavelength, making it inaccessible to ground-based facilities. Four stops to King’s Cross. Four stops for me to imagine the worst. Dad must be OK. I don’t have any grandparents, or aunts and uncles, apart from Mum’s sister . . . Is it Mum?
