I think, because Creed never entirely believed any of this horrific stuff was happening, it took the threat out of it. Probably not your expected average Herbert horror novel, it came at a change in his direction of style. James Herbert has been a permanent feature of the bestsellers lists since “The rats” was first published in 1974. The antagonist's motivation was quite peculiar to say the least and the constant referral to criminals amongst the criminals themselves and the police alike of "villains " was really bizarre to me ("why didnt you shoot the villain", "what about you and Trewick, any other villians we should know about? In 1950, a new born baby is found abandoned in a public toilet by the attendant, but the baby is not alone.

He has the rare distinction that his novels were considered classics of the genre within his lifetime. The Survivor (1976), his third novel, concerned the sole survivor of a plane crash who begins to experience visions of the afterlife. It took a long time for the story to get going, but once it did, about two-thirds of the way through, it didn't let up until it was over. Copies of the book – produced cheaply in paperback with a vicious-looking rodent on the cover, its jaws open and eyes bloodshot – flew off the shelves, the initial print run of 100,000 selling out in three weeks.

I mean, of course I did: the library had only a limited collection of horror, and his were one of the most gory ones there. Samen met de mooie politie-agente Ellie wordt Jim Kelso er op uitgestuurd om een grootscheepse misdaadorganisatie te ontmantelen.

This is a proper story-telling narrative, with the author explaining things for us and injecting some brilliant humour in the process. Creed gets what he wanted and after the mourners (for want of a better word) have left the graveside, the men with the shovels come and heap the dirt on the actress. A long novel about a haunted country house in England, it examined the relationship between religious zealotry and child abuse. In Shrine, he explored his Roman Catholic heritage with the story of an apparent miracle which turns out to be something much more sinister. It's a true testament to his writing and his enduring creativity that his books continued to be huge bestsellers right up until his death.

In the thriller The Spear (1978), a private eye finds himself involved with a neo-Nazi cult that plans to use the power of the spear that pierced the side of Christ to take over the world.Starting like most of Herbert's books (opening in the past, we are introduced to a broody male lead who's investigating a unexplainable, potentially supernatural event), its action heavy intro quickly fizzles out into a slow crime piece with predictable beats and no twists. It was a well-paced if unbelieveable story of modern demons and and arch-demon Belial as seen through the eyes of a papparazzi determined to seek out the "great photo". The gruesome and depraved events seem all the more horrific for taking place in rural, respectable England. This was a decent horror novel with plenty of vividly detailed gore and tension was built nicely throughout. I also thought it was interesting because it was written back in the eighties and talked about how computers might one day end up in the majority of households.
