About this deal

The complexities resulting from the marriage of spicy single pot still whiskey with Bourbon, sweet PX and Marsala casks are a feast for the senses. This special expression is in keeping with Walsh Whiskey’s innovative approach to whiskey origination which includes pushing the boundaries on single pot still. I am very proud of this whiskey, our first single pot still expression, and excited to bring a new core whiskey to the Writers’ Tears family that will become available to more and more of our followers in over 50 countries worldwide over time.” Produced by the same bottler (NOT distiller) who sells The Irishman blend, Walsh Whiskey Distillery Ltd., (have I mentioned recently how much I loathe NDPs – that’s non-distiller producer – who use the word “distillery” or “distiller” in the name?), Writers’ Tears is a novel vatting of 40% triple-distilled Irish single-malt whiskey “probably” from Cooley (but the source is unknown), and 60% triple-distilled Irish single pot-still whiskey from Midleton, the only distiller of mature single pot-still whiskey — for now! The vatting is aged for an undisclosed amount of time in ex-bourbon American oak casks and bottled without chill-filtration at 40% ABV. Note that The Irishman blend has the same two component types, but at different ratios. Bernard sources whiskeys made to his exacting specifications. He then augments the spirits through blending and finishing, honouring old styles and creating new ones in the process.

As whiskey creators, we work with a range of carefully selected partners to explore how different grains, whiskey styles and woods interact and contribute to taste over time – plenty of it! We seek-out the best styles and distillates in Ireland, as well as casks from the four corners of the world. When cask-hunting, we look for, not just those of the highest wood quality and barrel structure but, most importantly, the ones that have been seasoned with exceptional liquid. Our journey has led us to: Tastings of a range of Writers’ Tears expressions will take place on a Joycean inspired tasting trail across several locations in Dublin for the month of June including: Davy Byrne’s (Duke Street), Doheny and Nesbitt’s (Merrion Row), Kehoe’s (South Anne Street), The Palace Bar (Fleet Street), Mulligan’s (Poolbeg Street), Gibney’s (Malahide), The Taphouse (Ranelagh), The Grange (Deansgrange), The Graduate (Killiney), Fitzgerald’s (Sandycove) and Finnegan’s (Dalkey). Nose: Sugar, confectionaries, bubblegum. After the initial strength of the sweetness - malt and cream come to the forefront, with vanilla and citrus making an appearance as well. This is a light nose, indicative of its 80 proof. Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey is remarkable. I was not expecting to like a 40%, young, chill-filtered whiskey as much as I am. The blend of Irish Single Malt and Irish Single Pot Still creates a richness and depth that blows past my expectations and has me sitting here smiling like an idiot while typing this up and sipping on a glass.

Rich and heavy it has layers of sweeter fruity flavors and darker malty and candy flavors and aromas that balance each other out quite well. I can’t even imagine what the Writer’s Tears Irish Whiskey would be like at cask strength. I saw that they put one out so I guess I’m going to have to do some hunting. Sweny’s Pharmacy ceased operating in 2009. However, a number of literary enthusiasts collaborated to preserve the location as a celebration of literature, hosting daily readings of works by literary giants, which also air on Facebook. The pharmacy has been preserved in its original state, retaining its Victorian frontage, layout and musty atmosphere – including some uncollected prescriptions still in cabinets from Joyce’s time. The building was under threat from increasing rents until Bernard Walsh, creator of Writers’ Tears, stepped in and pledged to contribute towards the rent in 2019. Double Oak is the third core expression in the Writers’ Tears range which includes the Copper Pot and Cask Strength versions. It is the 14 th expression in the wider Walsh Whiskey portfolio, including the extended Writers’ Tears and The Irishman ranges.
