About this deal

This is because the Totally Chlorine Free method produces weaker fibres, a lower yield and higher energy requirements.

In our consumption of toilet paper, the UK is close to leading the world. The average Brit uses 127 rolls per year and 10,385 rolls in their lifetime. In the US, average yearly consumption is 141 rolls per person, whereas in Turkey they get by on 9 and in Nigeria a mere 1. This isn’t something to be proud of. Essentially, this means they pay for carbon offsets that cancel out the carbon emissions they produce. This isn’t perfect and there is always a lag in the carbon re-uptake, e.g. planting a tree will take decades to mature, but there’s no doubt this is better than not doing it. However, areas growing bamboo do not promote as much biodiversity as forests, especially in areas where land has been specifically cleared to grow it." If you’d prefer to avoid any kind of chlorine, then recycled paper is your best bet, but if you’d prefer softer paper then opt for bamboo. As part of their mission, Who Gives A Crap donates 50% of their profits to causes that help give people access to clean water and a toilet. According to the Environmental Paper Network’s paper calculator, tissue made from recycled content has one-third the greenhouse gas emissions of tissue fibre made from virgin wood. The good news is that each wrapper can be recycled, repurposed or industrially composted. WGAC even use soy-based ink that is biodegradable. Good attention to detail. I suppose a lot of this is down to personal preference and I think it’s hard to figure out which is the most eco-friendly. I went into more detail about eco-friendly toilet paper here and discuss alternatives to toilet paper as well. Forest Friendly Tissues One of the smaller companies, Nova Tissue, told us that demand for recycled paper simply isn’t there and that customers overwhelmingly want pure virgin paper. But why is this?

Most paper is now bleached with chlorine dioxide in a process known as Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF). This still emits chlorine but in much smaller amounts than when elemental chlorine is used. The majority of Who Gives A Crap toilet paper is made in China, but this year Who Gives A Crap announced that it would be starting to offer products made in the UK, too. The pulp and paper industry as a whole is the largest global consumer of virgin wood, using about 35% of harvested trees for the manufacture of paper. It is a major contributor to deforestation and thereby to biodiversity loss, soil erosion, species extinction, and ecosystem disruptions. So, although Who Gives A Crap’s toilet paper is not the cheapest available, it’s actually rather average. You do have to pay more for the more premium bamboo toilet paper, but the recycled toilet paper is more environmentally friendly anyway. That being said, as a whole China is not the most ethical of places and the Chinese government do run an oppressive state, which is often mentioned by Ethical Consumer. How does Who Gives A Crap toilet paper get to the UK?Who Gives A Crap primarily gets their post-consumer recycled paper from local schools, so they mainly use recycled textbooks, workbooks, office paper, and the like. What is bamboo toilet paper? Yes, it is. Who Gives A Crap’s 100% recycled paper is whitened using hydrogen peroxide. It is Totally Chlorine Free. Whether you dislike the individually wrapped toilet rolls or not, you can’t deny that Who Gives A Crap’s marketing has boosted the popularity and consumer knowledge of sustainable toilet roll. Certified B Corporations are leaders in the global movement for an inclusive, equitable, and regenerative economy. Unlike other certifications for businesses, B Lab is unique in our ability to measure a company’s entire social and environmental impact.” Potential Negatives about Who Gives a Crap

It’s also notable that, as recycled paper use by the big companies has decreased, their use of certified paper has gone up. For example, Kimberly-Clark’s use of FSC-certified fibre has increased by 20% in the last ten years. Their 100% Recycled TP was graded an A+ (595/600) and their Premium 100% Bamboo TP was graded a D (200/600). Actually, of all the toilet papers graded by the NRDC in 2021, Who Gives A Crap 100% Recycled TP had the highest grading. Brands like Cushelle have been linked to 1 million acres of deforestation a year in the Canadian Boreal forest which holds more carbon than any other forest.

Is bamboo toilet paper better for the environment?

Who Gives A Crap’s toilet papers blow any public washroom toilet paper we’ve used out of the water with their quality. They are both much stronger and softer than any public washroom toilet paper we’ve ever tried (and we’ve tried a lot). As we use reusable wipes and part-time family cloth, the 48 loo rolls will be sat there for many months gathering dust. I like knowing the rolls are protected and not covered in dust mites (which I’m allergic to) by the time I get to them. Very little scientific work has been done directly comparing virgin tree fibre toilet paper with bamboo and recycled alternatives. Plus, there are usually many variables involved in any product’s manufacture so it pays to be sceptical about claims that one material is always more environmentally beneficial than another.
