About this deal

Fabienne: This product has saved me loads of money! When out and about it can be a bit of a nightmare getting flask water to the right temperature or spending loads on pre-made bottles. Those days are thankfully in the past. This has saved me so much time and made life so easy to have Rapid bottles made in a near enough instant. I tried this product on a mini getaway, I usually have a prep machine and these Rapid cools give it a run for its money. Grant A, Jones S, Sibson V et al. (2023) The safety of at home powdered infant formula preparation: A community science project. Maternal and Child Nutri tion . Published online 03/10/2023 RapidCool™ is the innovative new way to prepare a bottle feed that conforms to NHS guidelines, so you can be assured it is safe for you and your little one. We’ve put all of our energy and know-how into a game-changing formula feeding solution that rapidly cools down a feed in only 2 minutes*, so you’re always ready to serve, wherever you are.

Baby kettles boil water like a standard kettle, and some may then ‘speed-cool’ the boiled water to 70 or 40˚C, or keep it heated at a set temperature for making formula later. The manufacturer’s instructions on at least one brand of baby kettle that we know of are to use water at 70˚C when preparing infant formula. Complete with a hot flask and innovative cool flask, the GoPrep Formula Feed Maker Kit will give you the freedom to make fresh formula feeds away from home in just two minutes*. Use the hot flask to store boiling water when you leave the house. When it’s time to feed your baby, transfer the desired amount of boiling water to the cool flask, add your formula, secure the lid and shake to mix the formula and start the cooling process. When the Tommee Tippee star on the LED digital lid turns blue, your little one's feed is the right temperature and ready to transfer into a clean, sterile baby bottle. We recommend that the feed is used immediately (as soon as the Nuby light turns green and indicates the feed has cooled sufficiently), as per the NHS guidelines. Current NHS guidance for the preparation of powdered infant formula is to boil at least 1 litre of fresh water from the cold tap in a kettle and then leave it to cool for no longer than 30 minutes. Following these instructions, it is expected that the water temperature should be at least 70˚C when the formula powder is added. In the UK there are a range of infant formula preparation machines available, the most popular formula preparation machine available at high street retailers appears to be the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep TM Machine . This machine claims to “ prepare a fresh bottle at just the right serving temperature within 2 minutes”. The machine uses a two-step process to prepare the feed. In the first step the machine dispenses a ‘hot shot’ of water directly into the bottle. The user then has two minutes to add the PIF, place the holding cap on the bottle, shake to mix and return the bottle to the machine. In step two, cold water is added by the machine to make up the selected feed volume to a comfortable temperature to feed immediately. A full flask of water securely sealed as suggested by The Department of Health remains at >70 OC for at least 3 hours, and in our tests was still above 70°C after 4 hours. If a 1 litre flask is filled with boiling water, it is likely that the water remains at above 70°C for at least 7 hours. This provides an option for parents who want to make up bottles of milk on longer outings, or during the night.

The RapidCool™ works by absorbing heat from hot liquids. After being exposed to heat, it will require a minimum of 3 hours before being ready to use again. The flask should feel cool to the touch. We have had a look for specific research for UV sterilizers for infant feeding and their safety and effectiveness and we were unable to find any scientific reports about this. These times are just a guide and it is likely that other hot taps might provide water at different temperatures. Water filters used domestically work in a variety of ways to remove contaminants such as chlorine from drinking water, improve taste and odour and prevent limescale formation. As for making them up I know it's not recommended now but I did it the old fashioned way. Emptied and refilled kettle, boiled it and left it to cool for 30 minutes to reach the correct temperature to make bottles, added the water then equivalent number of flat scoops of powder. Shook them well, then left to cool naturally at room temperature. When cool I stored them in the fridge, they can be kept for up to 24 hours. To warm up I used boiling water and a plastic jug (we had a flask that we filled with boiling water for going out). The table shows the results for a 500ml flask and a 1litre flask. Please note these are just estimates made by us in a domestic kitchen, and others may find they get different readings depending on types of flasks and thermometers used. The advice to boil the water is important to ensure that potential bacteria in tap water (which is not sterile) is killed. The advice to use the water when it is still more than 70⁰C is to kill any bacteria in the powder (which is also not sterile). Using water at a temperature lower than 70⁰C increases the likelihood that the water temperature may be too low to effectively eradicate any bacteria that may be present in the powder.

Probiotic powders marketed for use from birth have recently been introduced to the UK market by one of the main infant milk manufacturers. The product is regulated as a food supplement and is marketed to improve symptoms of infantile colic. The powders are designed to be mixed with either infant formula or breastmilk. Probiotic powders are not sterile and therefore adding them to infant formula according to the manufacturers instructions i.e. adding them to lukewarm infant formula, increases the risk of bacterial contamination. Furthermore there is no robust evidence for any health benefits for healthy term infants from consumption of probiotics. The NHS guidelines state that when preparing a bottle, you should use freshly boiled water, which has been left no longer than 30 minutes so that it remains at a temperature of at least 70°C. With RapidCool™, you pour freshly boiled water into the base along with your formula, but thanks to its patented technology the bottle cools the feed in 2 minutes*. Using freshly boiled water means that any harmful bacteria is killed and the RapidCool™ eliminates the need to run bottles under cold water or use an ice bath to get the feed to the right temperature. Whichever tap is used, care is needed when filling the bottles not to scald, particularly if you bend down to the right level to see the bottle markings to add the correct amount of water. Formula preparation machines are marketed as being a sterile and convenient method of preparing formula feeds at the correct temperature for consumption, within minutes. Whilst the scale of use of these is not known, recent research at Swansea University suggests that 50% of families are using preparation machines (Grant et al, 2023). It’s not surprising that babies prefer their feeds at body temperature because that’s what feels most natural to them. The Tommee Tippee All-in-One Advanced Electric Bottle and Food Pouch Warmer allows you to warm your baby’s feed to the perfect temperature in as little as 4 minutes*. Equipped with multiple settings, you can warm various feeds based on the type of container, starting temperature and volume, helping you Parent On. It is not necessary to sterilise open cups and sippy cups but they should be washed in warm soapy water and rinsed and dried following use. Although this may seem at odds with NHS advice on sterilising feeding bottles and equipment for a baby’s first year, the rationale is that feeding bottles and teats have many hard to reach corners and surfaces and sterilisation is the only reliable method of ensuring an appropriate level of cleanliness. I think it's so much easier than messing about making them as needed. And I know most people use the perfect prep machine but sorry to me that's laziness, you don't need a machine to make bottles in my opinion. I'd only ever make them the old fashioned way, regardless of what's recommended.

Faye: This makes life so much easier when I am on the go and need a bottle as soon as possible. I now wait no more than 4 minutes for a bottle whilst I am out. It’s so simple to just put the powder and right amount of water in it and just wait instead of making sure I have both cooled and boiled water. It’s super convenient and doesn’t take up a lot of room in the change bag. Faye: I would choose this product to win above all. I love my Tommie tippee machine but being on a tight budget like I am myself I feel that just buying this makes my life easier both in and out of the house! The fact it’s portable and most places where I have been can provide me with boiling water it’s just eliminates the stress of taking too long too cool a bottle What changes would you make to this product? How does it work? It’s easy-peasy! Boil fresh water, measure formula powder, fill RapidCool with hot water, add formula powder, and mix well, turning it upside down for at least 5 seconds. Then simply wait for the digital display to show a green Nuby logo and dispense the feed into your sterilised baby bottle. A 120ml feed will be ready to serve in only 2 minutes*. No cold-water baths to cool a bottle down, no having to reheat a made-up bottle, no worrying about making a feed correctly. Just a safe feed to NHS guidelines, day and night. Care must be taken to avoid scalds when handling hot water, especially when a full litre flask of water is being used. Great care must be taken that the milk given to the infant is at the correct temperature. Run the prepared bottle of formula under a cold tap to cool, shake vigorously and always test the milk temperature on the inside of the wrist before offering to a baby.
