Multiple Cooking Contest modes: Co-Op, Solo Challenge, and Take Mama On, in which the player can actually battle Mama. In the first Cooking Mama, the player is tasked with cooking various meals using the device's touch screen. Following the instructions of the titular "Mama", the player uses the stylus or finger to chop vegetables, slice meat, flip food in pans, and arrange the final items on the plate. The version of the game for iOS also takes advantage of the accelerometer in its devices with some similar gameplay to Cooking Mama: Cook Off. Each of these tasks is performed by completing a mini-game which usually lasts less than 10 seconds. The gameplay structure consists of the player progressing through a series of short minigames. The game features a total of 96 different dishes.

Dishes are created by using the DS stylus as your all-in-one multipurpose kitchen tool. With it, players can chop, slice, pan fry, knead, grate, mash, tenderise, mix, peel, carve, roll and much more besides. Once the dish is ready, the stylus can be used to add finishing touches to the presentation at table before the dish is greedily consumed by Mama’s demanding customers. Blowing on the in-built DS microphone will cool a hot dish down and by combining existing recipes, players can create a vast menu fit for a banquet. Let's Combine: The player can select two dishes to combine, completing mini-games from both recipes.
