The Batman”… those two words are enough to send most guys into daydream mode. The emotion that this superhero invokes in a person is almost inexplicable, but his cultural significance is undeniable. The character’scomplexity excites us, his darkness touches a darkness within us and inspires us to seek justice in our own world. There seems to be no other symbol that is more alluring than the Bat Signal. (Even while writing this article, I must have slipped into comic book daydreams a dozentimes or so.) (source: tinypic.com) Taken from the "Art of" book that's just been released, we get a closer look at the Batsuit donned by Robert Pattinson in the movie, along with the wingsuit his Bruce Wayne used to fly through Gotham City's imposing skyline. As we saw in the movie, this Dark Knight didn't have the smoothest of landings - a reminder that the vigilante is still in a very early stage of his vigilante career.

The vertical forces that act on the body are Lift and Gravity. Lift is the force acting on a body thatresults in the body moving up, which is typically causedby wing-like components. Gravity is the force of attraction towards the earth. The total force is the weight of the body, which is the product of mass and gravity (W=mg). Consider an airplane taking off… the combination of forces, specifically Lift (generated by wings) and Thrust (engines) helps move the aircraft abovethe runway and ascend. If you look at space shuttle launches, there is only a Lift force, as the shuttle has to take off or “Lift off” in a straight path. Therefore, theresult of these four forces determines howthe body moves in the air. (source: natgeotv.com) In addition, Pattinson uses a wing suit to glide off the tops of buildings. This is in contrast to the Christopher Nolan (and even Tim Burton) heroes that utlized their capes as a make shift gliding wing. Accepting the physics of all of these gliding methods, Bale and Keaton’s version would function like a hang glider. Pattinson’s, on the other hand functioned like any standard wingsuit. Therein lies the problem! While hang gliders can coast in for a safe landing, a wingsuit has to deploy their parachutes and float the rest of the way to the ground -- they simply can't reduce their speed fast enough for a safe landing without the use of a chute.
Another sequence called for last-minute alterations to the Batsuit during a climactic moment inside Gotham Stadium. The city is flooding and Batman is fighting off a number of henchmen but seems to be fading fast. He then pulls out a mysterious green serum from his utility belt and injects himself. “The scene was shot during one of the last days of filming and Matt asked us to make a special port,” says Crossman. “Toby Hawkes in our costume prop department made this port that you could flip up and put the pen in, which ended up being on his leg. This was all done before the film finished shooting so it was a dramatic afternoon.”Because of this, Pattison said his agents were surprised that he’d want to play a superhero character.
