About this deal

Deaf identical twins Heather and Holly Wilson, one of whom is an organic chemist and the other the owner of a deep-water submersible who had channeled all her yearning into an impossible dream: finding the bottom of Challenger Deep. I was tempted to stop my review right here. If you’re interested in reading about mermaids chewing on humans and then dragging them into the abyss, then this book is for you! If you read the words ‘killer mermaids’ and then shrugged… well, I don’t think reading the rest of the review will convince you, but I’ll do my best. A pet peeve of mine is when an author starts multiple names with the same letter. Did we really need a Holly, Hallie and Heather? Come on. It was hard for me to remember who was who, but at a certain point I honestly just stopped caring. I thought it was messy from the start. Lots of jumping around in time and place. But I thought, okay, I can deal with that.

It Can Think: While sirens are vicious predators, they are also sapient beings with multiple languages and the capacity for strategic planning. Creepy Long Fingers: The mermaids have two extra joints on their fingers, plus claws. They look spindly but are strong enough to gouge metal. Fish People: The sirens have muscular tails similar to eels and simian-like faces, webbed hands, and gills. A necropsy is performed on the body of a siren, further emphasizing their fish-like Bizarre Alien Biology. Dr. Roth spends a lot of time wondering about how they’ve gone unnoticed for so long, why they retreated to live in the Trench when they could easily take down man. And that’s such an interesting part to the story. “Nothing more nor less than an equal. One whose mastery of the waters outpaced our own, and left us with the choice to flee as predators, or to live as prey…” and i love that she always manages to carry a torch of humor through all the monster-filled gloom. there are plenty of funny moments here, most notably a perfectly-timed deadpan delivery of a t.s. eliot quote that was so unexpected, i literally barked with laughter.

YA Buddy Readers'...: Into the Drowning Deep (Rolling in the Deep #1) by Mira Grant - Restarting May 5th 2020 deadhedge on The Secret of the Sul’Dam: Subtle Changes to the Way the One Power Works in The Wheel of Time TV Series 4 hours ago Which leads me, not incidentally, to one of the things that Grant/McGuire is finally getting right for such a prolific author who likes to see the unseen and counter expectations: we finally have a female cast that feels developed and well-rounded. And while a romance is brought into it, it's a queer one, quite possibly the first in all her thirty-five-ish books. The descriptions of the sirens are also terrifying and Grant is so great at creating a clear image in your mind. “Its face was something like a viperfish’s and something like a mummified ape’s and something like the shadows that sometimes chased her through her dreams.” They’re also completely ruthless and continually show new and more evil ways of being able to kill a person. It’s such an amazing monster story!

Every person on this vessel was a story in the process of telling itself, and all of them were fascinating, and all of them deserve to be heard. A thin-fingered hand slaps across the lens, and the video stops. The screaming takes longer to end, but in time, it does. The book is extremely read-able and the things that kept me from going all fangirly were few. The repetition was the biggest thing. I don't have to be told the same thing over and over. I might not be the smartest cookie around but I usually get it after a bit.Our Mermaids Are Different: The sirens in a nutshell. They aren’t beautiful women with pretty, sparkly colourful fish tails. The sirens’ tails are more eel-like, their faces are almost simian in appearance with large round eyes and they have both gills and rudimentary lungs for surface excursions. Their “hair” has bioluminescent properties and is used as a lure to attract potential prey. Their hands have three fingers and an opposable thumb and have several extra joints and are webbed. Their flesh is poisonous to consume, and even their blood introduced to the human body has lethal effects. They can extend their jagged-tooth filled jaws to engulf and literally eat a person’s face off their skull. They can also communicate through a kind of sign language of their own making, are able to traverse with surprising speed while out of water, and can scale the sheer surface and angle of the ship's hull. Oh—all the mermaids are male. The only female is a leviathan-sized eldritch abomination. In essence, they are similar biologically to that of anglerfish: the female is hundreds of times larger than the humanish-sized males. Due to their impressive and extensive mimicry abilities, Dr. Toth decidedly reclassifies their nomenclature from mermaid to siren. Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they're not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life's work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost. Because You Were Nice to Me: One siren signals its fellows through sign language not to hurt Hallie because she communicated with him by the same means and established a friendly rapport.
