About this deal

Hands-on testing begins in our Lab under controlled humidity and temperature conditions. The key performance-based test measures how much water each dehumidifier collects in a 48-hour time period. Our engineers also use a decibel meter to assess how loud each machine is when running at its highest fan speed. Usability is another important part of our evaluation; it happens in the Lab, as well as in the homes of consumer testers, allowing us to test the dehumidifiers under real-world conditions.

Smart Dehumidification Technology - automatically control room humidity in a comfortable range (45%-55% according to room temperature) which inhibits bacteria growth. An A/C system, whether it’s a whole-house system, window air conditioner, or portable air conditioner, will remove some humidity. Pumps: Attached to the hose, a pump can send water up to a sink or window. Many can move water up to 15 feet.High-capacity dehumidifiers are usually power-hungry and noisy, but the MeacoDry Arete One is designed to do more with less energy and a lower volume, topping out at 40dB during typical use and keeping consumption to around 200W. In fact, both figures fall dramatically as humidity levels start to drop. It’s an excellent dehumidifier for larger spaces and, unlike most compressor models, will work at temperatures of between 5 and 25°C.

Key specs – Dehumidifier type: Desiccant; Tank size: 2l; Extraction rate: 6 litres per day; Dimensions: 48.5 x 29 x 17.5cm; Weight: 6kg; Warranty: 2 years All dehumidifiers can run in a stand-alone mode where all the water is collected in the reservoir. This means regularly carrying the reservoir to the nearest drain or sink and pouring it out. The performance numbers are important, but a fast-drying humidifier isn’t much use if it’s impossible to use. However, it’s worth looking out for newer and more energy-efficient designs. For example, Meaco’s MeacoDry Arete One 20L costs around 6p per hour to run, based on an electricity rate of 28.3p per kWh, while some models will cost significantly more at the same rate. Use your dehumidifier daily for a couple of hours and the difference soon mounts up.

How much does a dehumidifier cost to run?

Just like the larger model, the 10L has a laundry mode to dry your washing, and can double as an air purifier with the bundled HEPA filter inserted – although we found it a little less effective in our air-purifying tests than most dedicated models. As a dehumidifier, it’s hard to fault, working efficiently in small and medium-sized rooms to reduce humidity levels and get rid of mould and moisture. Throw in the intuitive controls and easily removable water tank, and this is the best of the compact options, and ideal for smaller rooms and homes. Despite the low price point, the Hisense is energy efficient at reducing humidity. It features a convenient auto mode, which adjusts the fan level as needed to keep humidity at a comfortable 50%. This saves energy as it keeps the fan speed low once the target humidity is reached. The damp reservoir can also be a home for mold or bacteria. A gentle wash with dish detergent will take care of that.

Keep it running all day long and the costs could mount up, but this is an excellent dehumidifier for situations where a refrigerant model just won’t work. Over time these filters get clogged and restrict airflow. Some can be vacuumed clean, and others are washable. Pull out the filter and vacuum or rinse it off every few weeks. Key specs – Dehumidifier type: Compressor; Tank size: 2.5l; Extraction rate: 10 litres per day; Dimensions: 47.2 x 23.7 x 31.9cm (HWD); Warranty: 5 years parts and labour

If you’re pulling out 15 to 20 litres per day, the dehumidifier needs to have a tank with the capacity to handle it or you will be emptying it out every few hours. Three litres is the absolute minimum, while five or six litres will give you a bit less emptying to do. Is there anything else worth looking out for? The capacity in pints relates to how much moisture the dehumidifier claims to absorb per day. The bigger the capacity, the larger and damper space it can handle. The reservoir also has a strong, comfortable carrying handle. The simple shape means that it’s easy to empty without spills. Under the old regulations, these sizes were 70, 50 and 30 pints, respectively, and you'll see such numbers with three older models above. Features to look out for

Low Noise Design- minimise noise and maximise comfort by optimising the refrigeration and air duct systems. The noise is as low as 39dB. The DF Dehumidifier also uses reciprocating compressor technology allowing less vibration to effectively reducing the noise level. One benefit of them is that they have smart Dehumidification Technology. The Smart technology automatically controls the room humidity in a comfortable range of 45 - 55%, preventing growth of bacteria. A second benefit of Midea Dehumidifiers is that they have a low noise design. They have noise as low as 39dB, and maximise the comfort by optimising the refrigeration and air duct systems. Each dehumidifier ran for two hours at its highest fan setting and set to continuous running mode. After, we measured to see how much water it had collected. All dehumidifiers have filters to keep dust off the heat exchangers. The Frigidaire has the sturdiest of those tested. In other cases it felt like the filters or clips that held them in place would break sooner or later.
