About this deal

There are several subspecies of Reindeer. Three subspecies are found in Europe, and Four in the Americas. If you clear an area of snow in the forest reindeer can be attracted to the uncovered vegetation. In my experience, this is particularly the case in years where the snow is very deep or if the snow has gone through several freeze-thaw cycles and is, therefore, crusty at some level or at multiple levels, thus making it hard for the reindeer to access what is under the snow. Areas cleared of snow can be attractive to reindeer, particularly in years where the snow is deep or crusty. Photo: Paul Kirtley. Reindeer in deep snow. Sweden, 2009. More About the Habitat & Range of Reindeer

They have a circumpolar distribution range (meaning they are found at high latitudes, and many longitudes around the globe). Reindeer are unique in that both sexes grow antlers. After the rut, females keep their antlers, while male deer drop their antlers. This gives some equality in competition for food. Some people also argue that it allows the deer to find more food, using the antlers to dig for vegetation. Reindeer Droppings & Urine

With the exception of Rudolph and Santa’s other Reindeer (who are magical creatures and live forever), the maximum lifespan of wild living Reindeer is between 10 and 15 years. Firstly during the summer months the tundra area becomes alive, and is an excellent resource of food for the Rangifer tarandus. By moving northwards the Caribou can take advantage of all this food that no other animals can use. Photo: Paul Kirtley Reindeer, Rangifer tarandus, known as Caribou in North America, are a widespread northern hemisphere species of deer, which are found in the boreal forest, mountains and tundra. Successful males may be able to collect together as many as 20 females to mate with in a given season. Gestation & Birth Reindeer make the most of every scrap of nutritious material available to them, from fresh green leaves and branches in the spring to lichen and mosses in winter. The challenge with our reindeer at the Zoo is to recreate that varied diet, and make sure they’re getting all the trace minerals and micronutrients they have adapted to take advantage of. Ours get a special pellet, developed by researchers around 30 years ago, based on their natural die, which dramatically improved the health and wellbeing of reindeer in zoos. Rudolph the reindeer is female Reindeer have been valued by humans for even longer, providing meat, skins, antler, bones, sinew and more to stone age hunters. Normally only a single Reindeer calf is born. Most of the young are born in June. At birth the calves weigh ~5 kg.The rut only last a few days, and the exact timing of this annual ritual depends on the latitude at which the reindeer live. Perhaps the most notable Reindeer behavior is the ability to fly, but this is reserved for Reindeer in Santa’s herd. Wild Reindeer cannot fly. Migrations At the beginning of spring they form into large herds that can number into the tens of thousands. These herds move slowly northwards towards the traditional calving grounds and away from the Boreal forests. In Reindeer the rutting period takes place between September and October depending on the location in which they live. They are closely related to Alaskan Caribou, Rangifer tarandus granti, Barren-ground Caribou, Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus, Peary Caribou, Rangifer tarandus pearyi, and Svalbard Reindeer, Rangifer tarandus platyrhnchus, Eurasian Forest Reindeer, Rangifer tarandus fennicus and North American Woodland Caribou, Rangifer tarandus caribou. The antlers can have various numbers of tines. At the end of the antlers may be a short part that is flattened into a short blade. Reindeer are the only deer species in which many females have antlers, as well as males. Even babies grow a small set before their first winter. Male reindeer will use their antlers to tussle with rivals – quite why females grow them is unknown, but it may help them defend feeding spots. Males lose their antlers around November, while females keep theirs through to January and February before shedding them. This can only mean one thing. Santa’s reindeer are definitely female. Wild reindeer in the UK Beyond arctic predators, insects tend to be an often overlooked cause of early mortality among wild Reindeer. What do Reindeer Eat?Here are a few simple crafts that are perfect for little ones (and can be made with school-aged children too). These reindeer ideas make the cutest Christmas keepsakes and sweet memories of time crafting together. After the calves are born, Caribou continue northwards to new feeding grounds on the tundra where they spread out and spend the summer. In summer, they’ll spend up to 20 hours a day eating, and pretty much double their body weight in preparation for the colder months. They can live almost entirely off those fat stores during the winter months, eating only the odd bit of lichen or moss. They become very static in the winter, keeping still as much as possible to conserve precious energy. We see the same pattern in reindeer at the Zoo. They don’t exactly shut down, but they’re definitely on a go-slow. Reindeer's eyes change colour
