About this deal

By far the least successful storyline depicts Mormonism’s early days under founder Joseph Smith – himself a polygamist, although the LDS church did not admit this until 2014. Whatever support the Mormon historical record lent to Krakauer’s analysis in the book doesn’t translate here; the 19th century scenes – stark, hokey, mostly sans historical context – resemble budget History Channel re-enactments and do almost nothing to enhance the later stories. They’re jarring and unnecessary distractions to the much more nuanced, taut later timelines, not least because they require awkward narration from the present-day characters – particularly poor Allen, also tasked with explaining Brenda to us. As Brenda and Erica’s double murder investigation progresses, Pyre comes to know more about the misogynistic dimensions of Mormonism. Ron and Dan’s past and their involvement in Prophet Onias’ School of the Prophets further make Pyre realize that his faith has destroyed the lives of several individuals, such as Brenda, Dianna, and Matilda. He talks to Allen about his doubts and questions concerning his Mormon faith. Allen, who was a pious Mormon like Pyre, sees himself in the detective. He asks Pyre to mentally “defeat the Church” to overcome the predicament. Image Credit: Michelle Faye/FX Is there anything inherently wrong with polygamy? Do we have a gene for monogomy? (I don't care, as long as no one gets hurt. And marrying 13 year olds, sometimes when they're your own daughter, is inherently hurtful.) IPA Reveals Nominations for the 27th Satellite™ Awards". Mormonism bases its legitimacy on the idea of continuing divine revelation. Where Christianity declares revelation ‘closed’ with the death of the Apostles, Mormons accept not only the writings of Joseph Smith to be divinely inspired, but also the possibility of direct revelation to any (male) member of the church. Inspiration is a part of being Mormon. I knew they were here [in town] and that their disposition had changed radically, but I couldn't anticipate anything like this happening." He hadn't seen either brother in three months.

This dramatisation punches up the Mormons’ historic sense of persecution, from the days when they were a religious minority driven out of Ohio and Missouri until 1984, when the Lafferty family, businesses failing and tax bills mounting, take succour in century-old Mormon teachings about rejecting a purportedly overweening state’s taxation policies and polygamy. The series premiered on April 28, 2022, on FX on Hulu. [2] It is also set to premiere on Disney+ ( Star) in international markets and Star+ In Latin America soon after. The series made its linear premiere on the FX channel on March 7, 2023. what i did find the most interesting were the numerous cases mentioned that exemplified such intriguing, albeit horrific, behaviour, particularly surrounding polygamy - the books main topic. from the lafferty murders to the abduction of elizabeth smart and even the events of 9/11, i appreciate the time JK takes to include these. i find the psychology behind these religiously motivated crimes to be so interesting, so that was my main motivation for reading this book.

Throughout Under the Banner of Heaven, Andrew Garfield’s fictional Detective Jeb Pyre is attempting to understand the motivations behind Brenda and her infant daughter Erica’s gruesome murders. He slowly understands the crimes to be based on rhetoric from the early days of Mormonism, a religion he has devoutly followed for his entire life. As Pyre speaks with the rest of the Lafferty brothers and understands the domestic violence, narcissistic delusions, and strict traditional upbringings of Dan and Ron, the detective realizes that Brenda and Erica were just the beginning of their path to disillusioned glory. Krakauer suggests that much of John Wesley Powell’s book, The Exploration of the Colorado River and Its Canyons, particularly his account of his dealings with the Shivwit Indians, should be regarded with a “healthy dose of skepticism,” and that it embellishes and omits important facts [p. 245]. Is Krakauer himself a trustworthy guide to the events he describes in Under the Banner of Heaven? Are his writing and his judgments fair and reasonable? What makes them so? So, now that we have the comments specific to the Mormon faith out of the way, let's move on to the questions about faith in general. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who is going through a personal crisis. It will boil your blood and make you think. (What more could you want?) Here are my questions:
