Quite a few of the puzzles are really well designed, and honestly, I’m all for a deliberately paced survival horror game that’s all about the puzzles and exploration- but Tormented Soulsdoesn’t quite strike the right balance at times."

Go down to Bunker 3C and through the door into the Prison. Kill or avoid the scary radiation dude and enter the last cell on the left; you’ll find a hole in the wall. Pass through and follow the passageway and you’ll find the canister up some stairs at the end. How do I fill the canister? Wait that makes so sense to cancel those versions but still go ahead with a switch version. All they are doing is losing out on potential sales.

Thanks in conjunction with PQube, Abstract Digital Works and Dual Effect, Tormented Souls is a traditional survival horror game that features modern visuals. From the initial load you’re greeted with a familiar warning. Tormented Souls takes cues from the likes of the original Resident Evil trilogy and Silent Hill. While both of those series have evolved in different directions (and Silent Hill being flat out absent), Tormented Souls is full of tropes that comes from both titles that blend together seamlessly. The developers have also included traditional D-pad tank controls for those feeling brave enough to try out this now frustrating style of movement. Personally, I don’t recommend it as that system really hasn’t aged well in, well, anything honestly. Movement in Tormented Soulsis also a little rough around the edges. While the fixed cameras themselves do a great job of heightening the tension, both movement and aiming can feel a little clunky and, at times, sluggish, especially in instances when the camera angle switches and your direction is suddenly changed. Trying to zigzag around enemies to just run past them if you’re trying to save ammo also always take more work than it has to, and combing through environments as you’re searching for items and resources feels a little sluggish as well. I realize that this stiff movement is a very deliberate choice on the developers’ part, since that’s what they’re trying to evoke in this decidedly old-school horror game, but they didn’t haveto retain this part of that experience as well.

Sad to hear the game is still coming to Switch, hopefully the PS5 release will still look really good. Play as Caroline Walker as she hunts for missing twin girls in a cavernous abandoned mansion. Can you confront your fears and uncover the secrets of Winterlake... or will you die trying? They canceled all last gen versions (PS4, XboxOne).... this was clearly a decision by the developer (Dual Effect) and no one else... Tormented Souls gets way more right than not, and I came away from it very impressed. This was the kind of game that once I got the hang of it (I have not played many survival horror games at all) I became enthralled with playing and exploring every area and uncovering all the secrets and story material I could.”

The answer is yes, yes it does. And wonderfully so. The developers have done a fantastic job of recreating the feelings that those early classics inspired in players. With some updates to certain systems and mechanics, Tormented Souls comes quite close to standing alongside its forebears. Overall, I found Tormented Souls to be easier than I expected. I didn’t struggle with the puzzles and adapted to the sluggishness of combat fast enough. Where the game does shine is in its story and the palpable sense of dread and tension the developers have crafted. With its design inspired by the classic games of yore – there’s even a grimy, industrial otherworld waiting for you in small bursts – Tormented Souls is more than a love letter to a much-loved genre, it’s a game that reminded me just how much I loved survival horror games to begin with while proving that most of the design is as viable today as when it was first created and subsequently refined. Move the cylinder once on the wrench to adjust it. Go to the door and use the wrench on the broken handle. Done! It’s dark! The mansion may seem abandoned, but the deeper you venture, the more overwhelming the horrors within become. Dark forces and unspeakable creatures will do everything in their power to protect the secrets within. Remain vigilant, and use anything you can find to fight off the encroaching terrors of Winterlake.
