He eventually have found the secret entrance to Ratigan’s lair and tries to free Olivia from the bottle, but it turns out to be set-up for Ratigan and his thugs to trap Basil and Dawson. P.S. This book is the inspiration for the Disney movie, The Great Mouse Detective. I have not seen the movie, and probably never will, in case it ruins my perception of this masterpiece. If you’ve already seen the movie, I fear it may be too late for you. Obviously as the film was intended for children, the subject matter is much lighter than it was in the original, which often focused on solving murder-mysteries.

Before long, all three are involved in a maze of mystery and intrigue, looking for clues and realizing that all clues point to one person—Basil's archenemy, the nefarious Professor Ratigan. This story is filled with stunning deduction after stunning deduction, which I obviously won’t spoil.
