About this deal

Pentagram partner Paula Scher is returning with a new New York exhibition of hermap-painting data visualisation project, which this time focuses on the USA, covering topics including population demographics, transportationsystems, geography and climate.

Five years later, she co-founded a design firm with a fellow Tyler graduate, but the studio began to suffer as a result of the recession of the early 1990s, and Scher joined Pentagram in 1991, becoming the first female principal to join the company. The following year, she became an art educator at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and since then, she has received hundreds of design awards. Scher is a recipient of the School of Visual Art's Masters Series Award. She has developed a reputation for her unique large-scale paintings, including her maps. Wikipedia lists some of the most successful album cover designs she created during this time:Boston ( Boston), Eric Gale ( Ginseng Woman), Leonard Bernstein ( Poulenc Stranvinsky), Bob James ( H), Bob James and Earl Klugh ( One on One), Roger Dean and David Howells ( The Ultimate Album Cover Album) and Jean-Pierre Rampal and Lily Laskin ( Sakura: Japanese Melodies for Flute and Harp). Scher says it is this which led to herobsession with hierarchies of information and how they can often be distorted and rearranged to emphasise particular content. Discover more: In 1991 Scher joined Pentagram as a partner, where she has created some of her most iconic works.Scher’s work is recognisable, mostly, by its emphasis on and style of typography. Often, I would say, misplaced in the category of Post-Modernism. Scher herself describes this distinguishing feature of her work to be influenced by her environment. New York City is tall, big, loud and in your face, elements present in almost all of her distinguishing works. Scher’s map-drawingbegan in the early 1990s as a way to express how she sees the world through image and type. In part, she puts her fascination with maps down to her childhood. Her father was a civil engineer for the United States Geological Survey which specialised in photogrammetry – the use of photography in surveying and mapping to measure distances between objects.

Speaking to Design Week Scher says: “This entire exhibit focuses on the USA; I have never had an exhibit where I focused purely on one place.” “Infographics as expression” Two years later, she was hired by CBS Records, but she left after a year to pursue a career at Atlantic Records as an art director. Soon after, she returned to CBS and remained there for eight years as the cover department art director; during that time, she designed several hundred album covers. While working at CBS Records, Scher received four Grammy nominations for her designs. She eventually left CBS to pursue her own work, including the development of a typographic solution based on Russian constructivism and Art Deco. In the new U.S.A series, some of the maps are 2m-tall and feature hand-painted boundary lines and colourful layers of place names and commentary. He developed a device called Stereo Templates that corrects the distortion caused by aerial photography. She sees the mapsas neither artistic expressions or infographics but rather “infographics as expression”. Together the maps “convey a spirit of place as we understand it,” she says.
