About this deal

The movie version of " Once in a Lifetime" appeared over the opening credits of the 1986 film Down and Out in Beverly Hills. [30] The film has been released on Blu-ray, widescreen DVD, VHS in both fullscreen and widescreen versions, and at one point Laserdisc (in Japan). [14] 2023 re-release [ edit ] Previously only available as bonus feature outtakes on certain video releases, ‘Cities’ and ‘Big Business/I Zimbra’ feature on the deluxe reissue. The polyrhythmic funk of Byrne solo number ‘Big Business’ segues seamlessly into the ferocious bongo-led drive of ‘I Zimbra’, while the bouncy, queasy bass of ‘Cities’ is brought to the forefront, making for two further enticing treats for an already bountiful record set.

and LP similar to Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense, but the vinyl is easier, and the color of the label is lighter. Lead singer David Byrne walks on to a bare stage with a portable cassette tape player and an acoustic guitar. He introduces " Psycho Killer" by saying he wants to play a tape, but in reality a Roland TR-808 drum machine starts playing from the mixing board. [6] The gunshot-like beats cause Byrne to stagger "like Jean-Paul Belmondo in the final minutes of ' Breathless', a hero succumbing, surprised, to violence that he'd thought he was prepared for." [7] The film premiered during the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 24, 1984, and entered commercial release in the United States on October 19, 1984. [2] Today, David Byrne says it’s interesting that this album was – for many people – an introduction to Talking Heads: “We had done a live album before this, but coupled with the film, and with the improved mixes and sound quality, this record reached a whole new audience. As often happens, the songs got an added energy when we perform them live and were inspired by having an audience. In many ways, these versions are more exciting than the Rubin, Rebecca (16 March 2023). "A24 Releasing Remastered Version of Talking Heads Classic Concert Film 'Stop Making Sense' ". Variety. Design [Booklet Designed With], Liner Notes [Booklet Written With] – Jeffrey Ayeroff*, Michael Hodgson (2) Harrison says the film still holds up today: “To me, Stop Making Sense has remained relevant because the staging and lighting techniques could have been created in a much earlier time period. For example, Vari-Lights, lights with motors to re-aim them, had just come into vogue. Had we used them, there would have been a timestamp on the film, and it eventually would have felt dated… The absence of interviews, combined with the elegant and timeless lighting, created a film that can be watched over and over.” Few gigs have captured the imagination of music lovers as much as Stop Making Sense. Almost forty years on, and it’s still considered the greatest musical performance ever captured, witnessed in its enduring legacy, Jonathan Demme’s subsequent fame found in Philadelphia and The Silence of the Lambs, a renewed interest following its incoming theatrical run, and its persisting parodies. One such spoof we collectively love at Norman is the ‘Final Transmission’ episode of Documentary Now!, where American comic Fred Armisen leads the final concert from new wave group Test Pattern. Featuring original songs written in the style of the Talking Heads, a segue parodying Tom Waits’ Big Time, and interview clips made up of spiels from inflated egos, it’s made with such sharp attention to detail that it’s clear it comes from a place of adoration, not of lampooning.

The inspiration for Stop Making Sense came when Demme saw Talking Heads perform during the band’s 1983 tour for Speaking in Tongues. Afterward, he approached them with the idea of making the show into a concert film. They agreed and worked together over the next few months to finalize the details. Ultimately, Demme filmed three shows at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater in December 1983 to create Stop Making Sense.Matrix / Runout (Side B, variant 1): I-IO-I ∆7401-X SH-SP 125121 B SH3 [Allied 'ɑ' logo] B-19702-SH3 SLM STERLING
