Inulin is a natural storage carbohydrate present in more than 36,000 species of plants, including agave, wheat, onion, bananas, garlic, asparagus, Jerusalem artichoke, and chicory. For these plants, inulin is used as an energy reserve and for regulating cold resistance. [5] [6] Because it is soluble in water, it is osmotically active. Certain plants can change the osmotic potential of their cells by changing the degree of polymerization of inulin molecules by hydrolysis. By changing osmotic potential without changing the total amount of carbohydrate, plants can withstand cold and drought during winter periods. Since it’s non-digestible and forms a gel when mixed with liquid, it’s also able to be used in place of oil (the reason you’ll find it in some low-fat cheeses, sauces, soups and condiments). 6. Increases Calcium Absorption inulin powder, also called insoluble inulin fiber. This type can be added to recipes or mixed into liquids.

However, some studies of children with overweight or obesity have not found that oligofructose or inulin reduce calorie intake ( 11, 12). Helps control diabetesFor example, studies have shown that oligofructose — which is related to inulin — can cause significant flatulence and bloating for people taking 10 g per day ( 31). Guess, N.
