About this deal

During my time at uni, instead of going to lectures which could have actually enriched my mind, I spent many solitary weeks untangling necklaces inside dingy fashion cupboards and feeling sick at the thought of asking editors what they needed me to do next. We use Google Analytics to see what pages are most visited, and where in the world visitors are visiting from. Careering will strike such a chord with anyone who has ever walked to a job interview in trainers with a tote bag containing heels over their shoulder, feeling like an imposter. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Careering is about modern womanhood, giving a funny, honest take on what it's like when a dream job turns sour - and what happens when you reach the other side of a toxic relationship with your career. Instead she’s tasked with creating an online magazine aimed at young women - or ‘The Girl’ as Harri likes think of her. I believe that, in general, the book manages to portray in a proper way the misfortunes, problems, and barriers that we have in the current job market, especially when it comes to young women, bringing very valuable and pertinent reflections on how to deal with these issues and validating feelings that often seem to be wrong, isolated and insignificant because they are not debated in an open and welcoming way in most spaces. Much like Insatiable, it brushes against some deeper themes, too, including grief and difficult familial relationships.

Hilarious, astute and full of human truths, Careering is a compelling and thoughtful read that every woman (and man) should have on their shelves. When you cut back the fat, Careering by Daisy Buchanan is essentially a story about perfectly capable, imperfect women struggling against the weight of rigid workplace structures and expectations.Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's daily session limit. Will she wake up to the way she's being exploited before her protégé realises that not everything is copy? Harri is meant to be a well-respected old-timer in the publishing world but some of her actions (or more appropriately, inactions) reduced me to skepticism. Will she wake up to the way she's being exploited before her protégé realizes that not everything is copy?

I just read an article in one of the Sunday supplements about these elevens, the pair of short, vertical frown lines that form in the gap between our eyebrows, which apparently must be Botoxed into oblivion before they start to multiply into other numbers.

Oh how much did I love this book - so insightful, so relatable and it just happens to combine two of my favourite things, reading and magazines (not that I ever have time to read them anymore with that out of control TBR but hey 🤷‍♀️). After devoting the best part of her career to Panache magazine, Harri is gutted when she doesn’t get the Editor role she’s always dreamed of.
