About this deal

Uranus and Neptune as blue disc like shape without any details (at around peak magnification as well) The Celestron NexStar 102SLT is a 102mm (4”) f/6.47 achromatic refractor with a focal length of 660mm. Being a standard Fraunhofer doublet achromatic refractor with crown and flint glass lenses, the 102SLT does show chromatic aberration, or “false color,” which is worsened by the fast f/6.47 focal ratio. But otherwise, the optical quality of the scope overall is pretty good.

Honestly? I love them both and trying to chose between the two is difficult. The SkyScout Scope 90 has some great gadgetry and is a virtual teacher… The Celestron NexStar 102 SLT is for quiet contemplation. Both are excellent beginner’s scopes – but the NexStar is better suited towards technically minded adults. Now, the editor in me comes into play. Let’s see if I can say this so even my Mom would understand: What you see in the same eyepiece in both telescopes is like comparing a regular window to a picture window. You can see the tree outside in both of them – but the f/6 window will show you the tree, the fence 10 feet away to the left and the car in the driveway to the right. As is typical with all of Celestron’s computerized telescopes, their SkyAlign auto-alignment feature never actually works – it requires perfect time/date/location settings and perfect leveling of the tripod, a combination you are unlikely to ever achieve. Use Auto Two-Star Alignment – it’s almost as easy. Keep in mind that the time and date must be entered every time the scope is powered up, and changing locations is a bit of a hassle. Should I buy a Used NexStar 102SLT? The 102 SLT mount is computerised, meaning that you don’t need to move it manually. Simply press one of the directional buttons on the hand controller to move the telescope. 3. 40,000-object Database The camera views the sky through a mirror, enabling you to view the phone’s screen at a convenient angle. The StarSense app displays the camera’s view of the night sky, using a time exposure if necessary so it may take some seconds to appear or refresh. The method of alignment is to aim the telescope at a chosen object — which is where the red-dot finder comes in handy — and then move the red crosswires on the app to the same object shown on the phone view. You can zoom in for better precision.

In short, this telescope would be great for anyone who likes to explore dark and unfamiliar skies. It is greatly portable and has a unique use for the NexStar computerized features. A 21st Century Refractor Computerised telescopes may appear complicated, but they are actually easy to use. The NexStar 102 SLT is no different.

Assembling the Celestron NexStar 102 SLT

And if you feel spoilt for choice and are not sure what to observe, select the Sky Tour feature and the hand controller will show you a list of the most interesting object currently visible in the sky. Select an object to begin the tour. 4. Portable Telescope Refractors rarely get the computerized treatment so it is refreshing to see that here. The Celestron NexStar 102SLT Refractor has all of the advanced technology that Celestron adds to all of its NexStar telescopes. This includes the 40,000 object database stored in a handy controller, SkyAlign tech and the automatic goto mount that utilizes both to work independently of your input.

The focal ratio also means it should be decent at astrophotography also due to the time needed to capture an image not being insanely long. The best part about having a GoTo telescope is that it becomes much easier to spot objects in the sky. You probably don’t know which area of the sky Jupiter appears in at a certain time of the year, but the telescope does. The battery compartment on this finderscope is located on top of the unit. Use a Philips-head screwdriver to loosen the screw holding the battery door closed. The screw is captured and will not fall out when you open the battery door. The ability to gather light from distant stars is the single most important part of a telescope’s design. 102mm for the primary opening is a size that offers a good amount of light potential which opens this telescope up to being able to see some good sights. Each object is shown either 4x4 binned ( ~8''/pixel) or 2x2 binned (~4''/pixel), both cropped to 600x400. Occasionally the full frame (3888x2592) is scaled to 600x400. Is the built in wedge on the SE4/5 going to be of much use AP wise or does the focal length rule it out entirely for DSO’s and AP work? The Explore Scientific 10” Hybrid Dobsonian provides more than 2.5x the resolving power and 6.25x the light gathering ability of the little NexStar 102SLT, and its buttery smooth, sturdy, and easy-to-use Dobsonian mount makes finding objects in the night sky a breeze. When dismantled, the 10” Hybrid rivals the 102SLT in portability and takes up fairly little volume in a closet, vehicle, or other storage space.
