About this deal

I hate cliche characters, and I’m tired of reading the same character with a different name/background/job. While the story begins with Atlee visiting the man she believes hurt her and abducted her sister, it shifts to the case and remains there.

The action stuff was pretty good but was a bit 'filled out' by the addition of some unnecessary and irrelevant writing. Having a virtually indestructible FBI Officer who never makes a mistake, makes it hard to ever feel like there's any real jeopardy, in what on the face of it should be a taut conspiracy thriller. To my line of thinking, "Long Road to Mercy" is Action-Adventure, but I noticed it was billed as International Mystery and Crime. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon. Her interest is further piqued when she realises that the missing individual works for a company that does not exist.I don’t want to spoil anything (even though I REALLY want to), so if you are inclined to, visit my Goodreads version to see spoilers. Long Road To Mercy, the first thriller to feature FBI Special Agent Atlee Pine, begins by introducing us to our new protagonist, and we learn all about her formative years spent with her family and the troubles that have plagued her ever since, saying more would spoil it for potential readers.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. An epic thriller-fast moving, beautifully imagined, and vividly set in the Grand Canyon and its environs. What starts off as severe animal cruelty snowballs to something that not only threatens Pine' life, but could cause global strife! stars was the plot - hardly credible - and the storyline - which seemed to wander the entire USA and back again. Assigned to the remote wilds of the Western United States, she has spent years honing her skills and building her endurance, always with one eye on the ultimate goal. Maybe next time she'll be sent into space and save the world from an invasion of martians who want to turn us all into babbling idiots who have the rude idea of writing novels about hero's who save the world from nuclear winter!

CHARACTER: My thoughts regarding Atlee Pine - At last, a female FBI agent who feels real and is not some Charlie's Angel or a model. They also have some other character that is just like them and who also happens to be a love interest. The backdrop of the beautiful and mystifying Grand Canyon was an added bonus for this armchair traveller. Atlee Pine is not only a strong FBI agent, but also harbours a deep backstory that is sure to be handled over a few novels.Aided by her able assistant, Carol Blum, Atlee finds herself in a world gone crazy as she is faced with desperate danger, horrifying murders, Russians, Chinese, Koreans and where she can trust no-one, not even the FBI. This early loss caused a major upheaval in her life and so began a cycle of relationship non-commitment. For me this book was a bit more Camel Club than it was psychopathic serial killer type thriller (which is more in my bailiwick!
