Armed with this revelation, Phillips soon moved on to other forms of art-making. At the local grammar school, he took up the bassoon and violin and sang as a baritone in the choir. In 1957, aged 19, he added the piano to his repertoire, and signed on as one of the original members of the Philharmonia Chorus. TP: The cover picture serves to identify one edition from another. The most recent echoes the first and says that I am still forging on. The cover as it appears on the iPhone/iPad app is the best, taking advantage of a changing image. I sometimes imagine the whole book like that were there but world enough and time. A Humument features in an exhibition of works from the Centre for Book Arts at New York Public Library TP: The art world now is behaving as a branch of the fashion business, and I am pleased always to have it now almost received as a primarily literary work by people with a fitter attention span than the those who flit from novelty to novelty like the puppet collectors of the art world’s ever falser reality.

Six of Hearts is released on Largo Records. The songs, written for and performed by Mary Weigold are based on Humument texts. This recording by The Composers Ensemble, conducted by John Woolrich In an age of uncertainty that does not cease to proclaim the death of the avant-garde and in which “suspicious readings” have become the norm, the refiguration (and disfiguration) of found texts has become an important part of experimental literary and artistic production since the 1960s (which, incidentally, is when the failure of the “historical”, self-critical avant-garde reached its apex, at least according to Peter Bürger’s controversial thesis, see Bürger 1984). In the course of Phillips's teaching career, at Ipswich, Bath and Wolverhampton art schools, he introduced Brian Eno, his best student, to the ideas that helped Eno develop ambient and generative music.A Humument is referenced in Imaged Words and Worded Images, edited and with an introduction by Richard Kostelanetz (pub. Outerbridge & Dienstfrey) Phillips has worked on this novel? poem? art piece? for 50 years. In 2017, the final version of the work will be published. It has been used as the basis of an opera (in 1969), a digital app, exhibitions, and several published versions. The book seems inexhaustible in its possibilities both for other art/poetry works and reading pleasure. Academic paper The Transformation of Narrative and the Materiality of Hypertext by N.
