The piercing needle is usually more hygienic as it can be a single-use piece of equipment and has fewer parts and places that bacteria can hide than the gun.

Lots of different places use guns – even some piercing studios that also use needles will use guns for lobe piercing. But the vast majority of gun-use is in hairdressers, nail bars, tanning/beauty salons and some high street accessories shops. When you get pierced with a needle, the artist needs to clamp the skin before the needle can go through. This is to make sure the skin doesn’t move. The clamp also allows the artist to get the needle in the correct place when piercing. Getting a piercing will of course increase your risk of an infection because you’re creating a ‘wound’ of sorts. This is why it’s important to get it done professionally and in a pre-sterilised environment. My eldest daughter went for her ears piercing yesterday and it seemed like such a monumental moment in her childhood! If you have your ears pierced it is always something you can remember. A rite of passage! I was 9 years old, went to Claire’s and was actually quite surprised I was allowed to have it done that young! My Mum was always quite strict, so I expected to have a long wait. I remember they used a gun and I do remember it was a bit of a bang when they were pierced. Since then I have had my ears pierced again on both lobes with a gun and I had a helix piercing about 12 months ago with a needle. This final piercing definitely fuelled my decision for my daughter to have her ears pierced with a needle, as I had a really good experience. She wasn’t anxious, as can suffer with this sometimes. It’s a common question to ask when deciding about children’s ear piercing. Do you get your kid’s ears pierced with a needle or gun? Piercing Guns’ or ‘Piercing Systems’ can’t be sterilised between clients, meaning that the risk of bacteria or other pathogens remaining on the gun from the previous client is likely. When pathogens remain on the gun, they will often be transferred to the next set of gloves the practitioner dons, and then onto the client should they touch the piercings they have just performed. Many of these pathogens can survive for some time on a hard surface such as a piercing system or gun. In some cases this can result in an infection or the transmission of blood borne pathogens. TL;DR? Thompson stops short of telling people not to get pierced with a gun — he says they do work and are a convenient alternative. Plus, he says, he’s not a big fan of being overly stringent about something that should ultimately be a fun experience. In addition to all of this, there is one more important thing to note. These experiments were performed on cadavers. This was noted in the discussion section of the original paper, and means that a lot of the arguments both for and against piercing guns cannot use this paper as evidence. The study is unable to follow through with any wound healing, jewellery sensitivities, or infections caused by each method. Safe piercing. No one can blame you for getting pierced with a gun, you walk in somewhere offering and you – quite rightly – assume that the procedure will be done using the most up-to-date and safest technique possible. This is where the gun-wielders will let you down. And this is why I have made this blog – to educate you on your options, so you can make an informed decision. What you choose to do, and where you choose to take your custom is – and always will be – your choice alone. Right after an earlobe piercing, your ear may be red or swollen. That should go away after a day or two. Does the piercer use proper equipment? While some venues use piercing guns for earlobe piercing, the Association of Professional Piercers cautions that reusable piercing guns can't be properly sterilized and can damage ear tissue. For earlobe and other body piercings, look for a piercer who uses a fresh, sterile, disposable needle to create a hole and then inserts a piece of jewelry into it.

Pain levels and tolerance vary from person to person but generally you can expect your ears to hurt for a couple of days after getting pierced. You will initially feel a sharp pain when getting your piercing which is often followed by a dull throb or ache as you do have a fresh wound on your body. You may find that your ears will swell not long after the piercing but after a few days, this will reduce. This is simply your body’s natural reaction and marks the start of the healing process. Ear piercing with needle pain is reported to be less than being pierced with a gun. I’m not for one minute saying that EVERY gun piercing will cause problems, or that EVERY needle piercing will heal without incident. Needle piercings can be problematic and swell, just like gun piercings, but it’s a much less common occurrence. And the damage done (if any) is much more rarely permanent/extensive. Proper aftercare is required with any piercing; failure to follow it can easily result in a poorly piercing, whether done with a gun or needle. The main problem with gun piercings is the jewellery used being sub-standard. I see many more gun piercings that have triggered an allergic reaction than those which are infected. Needle piercing can be SAFELY used for a much wider range of placements, and with far more jewellery options. The healing time on a needle piercing on an earlobe is roughly 2 months. Yes, the gun-wielders will tell you it’s 6 weeks with the gun, but this is purely so parents will take their children to get their ears pierced at the start of the summer holidays (remember, it’s moneymoneymoney with big companies). With a gun, I would expect anything up to a year for healing, though of course different people will experience different healing times. The piercing gun. They are unanimously reviled within the professional piercing industry, and are an area of hot debate. It is quite an emotional subject for a lot of us. But why are piercing guns so bad, and why are there petitions by piercers to get them banned in the UK? Age limits are likely to vary from studio to studio depending on a studio’s insurance. We would suggest asking a studio you are looking to book in with what age they are insured from for ear piercings (a reputable piercer will be happy to tell you!).The aftercare is also an important part of making sure the piercing doesn’t get infected. Clean the piercing twice a day using a clean cotton bud and a sterile saline or antibacterial solution, and remove any dried blood or discharge with warm water. Don’t twist it though because this can irritate the piercing. The jewellery used by a piercing gun or piercing system is unsuitable for an initial piercing. Being ‘one size fits all,’ it is often ill-fitting and doesn’t allow room for swelling, which is a common side effect of the trauma caused by piercing guns. The material that the earrings are made from is often labelled ‘Mystery Metal’ by reputable piercers, as it’s difficult to discern exactly what it is made from. Simply this means that it is made from unverified materials that may not be suitable for long term wear in the body or could have a rough surface that irritates the skin.
