About this deal

With the launch of the Pixel 8 in October 2023, Google introduced two additional colors: Bay (pastel blue) and Porcelain (light gray).

When we first used the Google Pixel Buds A-Series, we found one significant flaw that might make you pause, but Google has since resolved this issue. Pixel Buds also give you hands-free access to the Google Assistant, so instead of turning to your phone for quick tasks, just say “Hey Google,” and ask the Assistant for whatever you need—playing a podcast, sending a quick text, or translating a foreign language. If you don’t see auto-updates, grant the correct permissions by doing a long press on the app’s icon, selecting Permissions, and then Allow nearby devices.Like the majority of true wireless earbuds, the Pixel Buds are not repairable, making them ultimately disposable.

To charge your Pixel Buds charging case, plug the charging case into a power source using the included USB-A to USB-C® cable. The company publishes environmental impact reports for some of its products but not the Pixel Buds, and will recycle all Pixel devices free of charge. And even then you'll likely spend most of the conversation staring awkwardly into middle-distance while Assistant tries to work out what the hell is going on. There is an overemphasis on the highs and a one-dimensionality that results from not being able to hear any low end. If you're looking for a quick answer, then no, the Google Pixel Buds are not a good choice of earbud if you are primarily an iPhone or Mac user. If a song’s chorus arrives just as I leave a loud construction zone, suddenly, the music will sound disproportionately quiet as the volume drops in response to the environment.

When used with an Android phone, tapping and holding activates Google Assistant, allowing you to issue commands and ask questions that are answered when you remove your finger.

According to Google, you’re looking at five hours of listening time and up to two-and-a-half hours of talk time, as opposed to the three hours of listening time that we got from the Google Pixel Buds 2. Earbuds status light (opened case): To quickly check the battery level of your Pixel Buds when they’re in the charging case, open the case lid. Low-frequency noise canceling is quite good and renders frequencies below 200Hz anywhere from one-half to one-twelfth as loud as they would sound without earbuds. You cannot replace the battery either, which makes them ultimately disposable and loses them a star.

Compared to the first-generation Pixel Buds storage case, the second-generation added wireless charging and retained the USB-C charging port for its internal battery. I tested out the Google Pixel Buds for a few weeks, and while there are some things I like about them, honestly, Apple users can find better earbuds out there. The Pixel Buds were announced at Google's annual hardware event on October 4, 2017, alongside its second-generation Pixel 2 smartphone.

The charging case has a USB-C connection, and I was surprised to discover it also has a magnet, meaning it won’t get yanked off your PC tower by the cable, and you can hang your niece’s artwork on the fridge with it. Holding your finger on the ‘G’ logo on the surface of the earbud invokes Google Assistant for commands and questions when connected to an Android phone. The case is good, the battery life is decent, they don’t stick out far from your ears and have some fancy features with Android phones but also work fine with Windows PCs and Apple devices. The large size worked better for me, but no matter the size, the Pixel Buds became uncomfortable after extended use. The first-generation Pixel Buds consist of two earbuds linked by a fabric-covered cord, which connect wirelessly over a Bluetooth 4.
