About this deal

Once golden, I removed the churros from the oil. The exterior was firm and crunchy, while inside, they were soft and slightly chewy. A few of the churros had singed slightly when they were initially dropped in, sinking to the bottom of the pan, but otherwise cooking was even and thorough.

The basket was easily cleaned in the dishwasher, but decanting the oil from the fryer was awkward – the lid needed to be held open. Wiping it out by hand was straightforward, but a removable lid would have been preferable. Why buy the 1.5 Litre Stainless Steel Fryer ? Upgrade your kitchen with the stylish design of this deep fat fryer. Its strong and sturdy properties ensure a long-lasting appliance for your smaller cooking needsI piped pieces of warm churro dough directly into the oil – minus the basket – and left them to fry. This took around 12 minutes. While the dough cooked, the viewing window steamed up, and there was also steam emanating from the holes in the lid. As I couldn’t see how the churros were cooking, I had to lift the lid every few minutes. The lip at the side of the lid is a good idea for keeping the shape of the fryer compact, but in use I found that steam would rush out as the lid was lifted, requiring the need to wear oven gloves. There’s only guidance for cooking chips in the instructions of the 1.5 Litre Stainless Steel Fryer – there are no recipes – so you’re on your own when it comes to getting the most from the machine. After 40 minutes from cold, the chips began to appear golden and cooked – although, possibly, the frying time could be reduced by raising the temperature. Thanks to its non-slip feet this deep fat fryer stays still and secure on your countertop for a safe cooking environment

It’s ideal for cooking side dishes and starters – or even a deep fried Mars bar (if that’s your thing). Thank goodness it’s fry-day! There’s a graphic guide to cooking heats and times for different food, such as vegetables, chips and poultry, and a single indicator light to show it’s heating up and to indicate when it’s ready. Fish test: The basket and fryer weren’t large enough to fit a fillet easily and it took 10 minutes for the batter to cook and crisp. You can control your cooking by adjusting the temperature (from 70°C to 200°C), giving you perfectly crispy results whatever you’re frying, and there’s also built-in overheating protection for extra peace of mind. There’s no timer or on-off switch, and operation is controlled by a thermostatic dial, which goes up to 190ºC (with common frying temperatures of 150, 170 and 190ºC marked). You can fry by dropping food directly into the oil or by using its equally compact frying basket. This features a handle that can be folded in or detached for storage, and a hook so you can set it on the edge of the fryer to drain excess oil from the contents. 1.5 Litre Stainless Steel Fryer – What’s it like to use? There’s a reason why more expensive deep fat fryers, such as the Tefal FR804 OleoClean Pro, have removable oil tanks and pans – cleaning out a fixed one, even when it’s compact, is no fun. The VonShef model features a small notch around the rim of the pan, presumably to help oil pour out more smoothly when draining, but I found that it still dribbled and splashed over the worktop. As the lid is fixed, trying to empty the fryer involves holding it awkwardly to keep it open while pouring. Wiping out the majority of residual oil and food debris from the small pan then filling it with warm, soapy water to soak, was both time-consuming and messy. Next, I made chips from raw potatoes. After peeling, chipping and drying them, I piled the potatoes in the fry basket, and, following the advice in the instructions, submerged them into the oil while it was still cold. Then I set the dial to 170ºC. Or even What are the Top 10 affordable (best budget, best cheap, or even best expensive!!!) 1.5 Litre Deep Fat Fryer available? Etc. Admittedly, you’ll be able to get up to 20 uses out of the oil before having to empty and clean it out, so it’s not a job you’ll have to do every time you use the fryer. However, you may need to filter out leftover bits of food from the oil more regularly, so some way of pouring it out without drips would be a huge improvement. On the plus side, the basket is dishwasher-safe but the handle still required hand-washing. Should I buy VonShef 1.5L Deep Fat Fryer?
