About this deal

A fast-paced adventure, this story brings to life one of Africa's most fascinating civilizations, the ancient Edo Kingdom of Benin.

Teachers notes, linked to the text, are also available to download for free from the publishers, Dinosaur Books Ltd.

But when Papa Eze himself becomes ill, he knows it's time to reveal to Ada her true heritage - time for her to travel deep into the forest to discover the ancient Edo kingdom of Benin, and to use everything within her power to heal the terrible divisions that are tearing the kingdom apart. Pursued by those who want her dead, Ada sets off on an incredible journey which tests her strengths to their limit with just her close friends, the guidance of her ancestors and her own self-belief to help her. My favourite character was Ada because she was strong, brave, and courageous and has an incredible family past. The language contains many references to the period; the actual language and enjoyable plot isn't going to challenge any Year 5 or 6 students working at or above expected level, but most will like the book.

The book follows the story of Ada, who discovers her true identity and must travel into the heart of the rainforest to heal the divisions that are occurring within the kingdom. In summary this book is about a girl who finds out her father is the Sky-king and that Papa Eze who is Ada’s guardian offered to look after her for Ada’s mother. While Eze is away consulting a diviner, Ada with the help of Mbe, Eze’s apprentice, risks a journey of her own to find some Golden-leaf bark as she has noticed Eze is becoming weaker. Written by British Nigerian author Dinah Orji, the book appeals to any child that likes to be transported to another world and is about friendship, loyalty and the bonds of family. An immersive adventure story, this short novel is a thrilling read for any child who likes to be transported to another world and any reader with an interest in Black history, the Benin Bronzes, West Africa and African children's stories. This is a brilliant story for engaging children (an adults) in learning about life in the Benin Kingdom. My least favourite character was Ujo pronounced oo-jor because he betrayed papa Eze and Ada to the Edo king (the sky king) Ogiso. Ada lives with Papa Eze, a herbalist and healer who had found her as a baby and brought her home as his wife and child had died.

Eze teaches Ada his knowledge and skill in the ways of the forest but she feels something is missing and wants to find out more about her ancestors. When reading this book, you become completely absorbed into the culture of the West African people … because the story is rich and gripping. PLEASE NOTE: From 1st of July 2021, shipments from the UK to EU countries will be subject to Value Added Tax (VAT) charges. Children will also explore the meanings and pronunciations of significant names and items from West Africa, supported by the 'Fact vs Fiction' section at the back of the book.Having lived and worked in the educational sector of Benin City for several years, I appreciated discovering this wonderful, adventuresome story that can be enjoyed by boys and girls of all ages. She also caught out Chief Obir, who was my least favourite character because he tried to get Ada and Nosa sacrificed to save his throne. The book includes a factual section at the end, to help readers widen their knowledge of the ancient Kingdom of Benin and West African culture and traditions.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. This is an immersive adventure story and perfect for any child who enjoys being transported to another world. This book includes a factual section at the end, to help readers widen their knowledge of the Kingdom of Benin and West African culture and traditions and linked resources and activity sheets are available to download for free from the publisher, Dinosaur Books Ltd: https://readingagency.The book is rich in details of village life contrasted against the bustle and splendour of the forest city. The historical Benin Kingdom is now an option for UK primary teachers at KS2, and is a great option for those who are keen to diversify their curriculum. Through the sequence of learning, children will explore the story from various perspectives, comparing characters and writing letters and diary entries in role. On the path of the hunters, often Ada and her friends are the ones being hunted and this journey is a test of strength, self-belief, faith and bravery in the face of warriors and chiefs who show no mercy. Ada must now travel deep into the forest to discover the ancient Edo kingdom of Benin and use everything within her power to heal the terrible divisions that are tearing the kingdom apart.
