About this deal

When I was twelve years old I gave a mini presentation to my English class about this book. Afterwards it was time for questions, one annoying girl (who looked strangely like Princess Leia from Star Wars) persisted in asking me, several times, if I didn’t realise that this was a “kid’s book.” She couldn’t understand how I could be reading it at my age; she even went as far as to call me childish. I was terribly insulted. I didn’t know how to respond. She went after me and gave her presentation on The Golden Compass which she said, whilst looking at me, with her nose up in the air, was a book for adults. Her mum had read it after all. Oh yeah, nasty piece of work, but what it makes you think, though, and wonder, is what's gonna happen to her when she tries the medicine. Both of those quoted passages are gone. Simply gone. The following four sentences remain unchanged: "George didn't say a word. He felt quite trembly. He knew something tremendous had taken place that morning. For a few brief moments he had touched with the very tips of his fingers the edge of a magic world." - but this wordless reaction is NOT to his parents' shrugging and accepting response to the elimination of Grandma from the world, but rather to the much earlier puzzled reaction by his mother ("Mrs. Kransky kept wandering around with a puzzled look on her face, saying, 'Mother, where are you? Where've you gone? Where've you got to? How can I find you?'") This story leads to a fantastic opportunity to work with profits and costs. Mr Wormwood explains how he cheats car buyers by adding sawdust to silence the gearboxes. Can children work out his costs and the profits received from his fraudulent cars? And who can blame him? I mean... Quentin Blake's illustrations REALLY show you how disgusting that grandma really is.

It made George choke and splutter. It was a smell unlike any he had smelt before. It was a brutal, bewitching smell, spicy and staggering, fierce and frenzied, full of wizardry and magic. Adding fizzy vitamin tablets to oil creates a wonderful lava lamp; adding glitter and colour creates a lovely dreamlike effect. George creates the ultimate potion in this fantastic story of chemical exploration. It provides an opportunity to explore density of liquids, volume and capacity whilst the children create their own potions. Left with an ungrateful and rude grandma he decides to start a new medicine to make her less rude and mean. He mixes, shoe polish, jujube fruit juice, some spices, toothpaste, and engine oil. He then boils it and puts it in his grandma's medicine. Then when grandma is about to drink the medicine that will kill her (at this point, Mom and george are trying to get her to not take it),Dad says, To allow the children to observe swelling, just as the peach did, they could place a gummy bear in water and watch it grow as it absorbs the water. The Twits

After Grandma entirely disappears, we are told, "'That's what happens to you if you're grumpy and bad-tempered,' said Mr. Kranky. 'Great medicine of yours, George.'" (Grandma was George's father's mother-in-law, so you know.) Think about medicines that the children are familiar with. What do they do to our bodies? How can we use them safely? It was wonderful to stand there stirring this amazing mixture, and to watch it smoking blue, and bubbling, and frothing, and foaming, as though it were alive." Ouellette, Jennifer (17 December 2020). "Don't try this at home: George's Marvelous Medicine is quite toxic" . Retrieved 23 December 2020.Retell the story using expression and thinking about the performance. Watch this Youtube video for some inspiration: Mmmm. I really like Roald Dahl but this book...is a little scary. I wouldn't let my child read it. Introducing the idea into a child's head to create a concoction to add to a liquid medicine someone is currently taking is not something I want to do.

I always thought in books that children were supposed to be good and old ladies were really kind, but when I first read this book I couldn't believe what George was doing. Kirka, Danica. "Critics reject changes to Roald Dahl books as censorship". abc NEWS . Retrieved 3 March 2023. George's Marvellous Medicine is a children's book written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake, first published in 1981. Despite Roald Dahl having enjoined his publishers not to "so much as change a single comma in one of my books", in February 2023 Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Books, announced it would be re-writing portions of many of Dahl's children's novels, changing the language to, in the publisher's words, "ensure that it can continue to be enjoyed by all today." [8] The decision was met with sharp criticism from groups and public figures including authors Salman Rushdie [9] [10] and Christopher Paolini, [11] British prime minister Rishi Sunak, [9] [10] Queen Camilla, [9] [12] Kemi Badenoch, [13] PEN America, [9] and Brian Cox. [13] Dahl's publishers in the United States, France, and the Netherlands announced they had declined to incorporate the changes. [9] This story also leads to control activities where the children could design an escape vehicle to navigate through the underground tunnels, perhaps incorporating a digging arm for the front? FAQs

They try it again, but it does not turn out like the first batch did, it only grew the leg. They give the grandma another batch of the medicine and it makes her shrink to the point that no one can see the mean old grumpy lady. Update this section! Johnson G, Davies P (2020). George's Marvellous Medicine (known as George's Marvelous Medicine in the US) is a children's novel written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. First published by Jonathan Cape in 1981, it features George Kranky, an eight-year-old boy who concocts his own miracle elixir to replace his tyrannical grandmother's regular prescription medicine.

In George's Marvellous Medicine we meet young George who is burdened with the job of giving his Grandmother her daily medicine. Again Dahl has gone against the norm and written the Grandmother as a mean, snarling, despicable character rather than the sweet old lady we are accustomed to with book Grandmothers. And suddenly, George found himself dancing around the steaming pot, chanting strange words that came into his head out of nowhere! James meets different minibeasts whilst travelling in the giant peach which leads to an exploration of the different animals and their natural habitats and diets. What size are they naturally? How much would they need to grow to be the size in the story?

What’s the story?

Look at different types of materials… Which ones would dissolve in George’s medicine? Which ones would melt? Which ones would float / sink? Being a medical expert was one of what Dahl called his "dreams of glory": he had enormous respect for doctors and particularly those who pioneered new treatments. He dedicated the book to "doctors everywhere". [1] An audio reading of it was released with Richard E. Grant narrating. In 2003, it was listed at number 134 on the BBC's The Big Read poll.
