About this deal

Mumsnet users appreciate the course’s balanced approach to all kinds of births and found it useful for learning the techniques, although some did find that the course pushes the idea of home births which is not going to be suitable for everyone. Throughout my pregnancy, I've been trying to read several books that will prepare me for what's to come. One of the most important topic that I'd like to know more about is the process of birthing a baby. Hypnobirthing was recommended to me by a close friend who gave birth last year and told me it had helped her tremendously. So a few months before my due date, I made it a mission to finish reading this book and see what it has in store. Even though some parts of this book felt irrelevant due to the different cultures in my country, I'm still grateful I took the time to read it because it allowed me to understand what will happen during labor and delivery. I can't say much about the hypnobirthing techniques because I haven't got a chance to practice them yet, but I think it's worth trying since it sounds so logical and science-based. Having worked with celebrities including Fearne Cotton and Giovanna Fletcher, Hollie de Cruz is a renowned hypnobirthing coach.

In this book, The Positive Birth Company’s founder Siobhan debunks common myths about hypnobirthing and explains why she believes it can make every type of birth a better experience - from a water birth at home to an unplanned caesarean in theatre. Baby with Bee offers hypnobirthing classes catering for Eastsiders with classes in Katong; there’s also the option of Thomson Medical Center too. All classes are on the weekend for these courses, and there’s group and private options too. Don’t fancy leaving home? There are also online-only classes! The course comes with a copy of the ‘ HypnoBirthing– The Mongan-Method‘ book, two CDs to practice your relaxation at home, plus pre- and post-birth support options! As someone who enjoys yoga and have experience with breathing techniques for meditation etc, I can see this being useful. Obviously I won't know how useful for a few more weeks yet, though! According to The Positive Birth Company, women should use up and down breathing techniques. Up breathing is used during the first stage of labour where the uterine muscles are drawing up and your cervix is dilating to 10cm. It is a technique which is also used for helping people with insomnia and anxiety. It requires breathing in for four and breathing out for eight. Do this four times to help you breathe through a surge (also known as a contraction) - you can practise this during pregnancy. Hypnobirthingwill change your mindset towards birth and give you the tools needed so that you can navigate your birth - and any twists and turns - with confidence, feeling calm and in control throughout.Fast forward to the delivery suite, and it seemed that hypnobirthing came into its own, and I took more on board than I perhaps thought. Any mum will know that you get into your zone when in labour, and I think the breathing and reframing of the birth away from terrifying to positive with a hypnobirthing approach massively helped me (as well as being fed Haribo gummy bears on demand for the whole labour). I managed to get through labour without pain relief, something I’d never imagined possible before, and I definitely credit that to the techniques I learnt. The big question, of course, is, does hypnobirthing work? Well, there’s heaps of research out there showing the merits of hypnobirthing, plus some pretty famous fans (Angelina Jolie and Megan Markle were both rumoured to use it!).

Using a range of techniques, including self-hypnosis and visualisation, the book can help you feel more calm and confident during labour, leading to less chance of intervention and reduced pain. How we chose our recommendations Recommendations from parents Expert hypnobirthing teacher and founder of The Positive Birth Company Siobhan Miller has made it her mission to change the way we approach and experience birth. Through her teaching she seeks to educate and empower parents - and their birth partners - so that they can enjoy amazing and positive birth experiences, however they choose to bring their babies into the world. Leaning more into the Hypno part of Hypnobirthing where a lot of the other resources I've read or classes have tried to distance themselves from things like scripts for relaxation; the general parts, talking about using your BRAIN as an acronym for Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Instinct rather than just taking the first option that comes to you is one of many structures that the author has formalised in her own way and is generally good advice. It is Marie F. Mongan’s mission to empower women to believe in their bodies so that childbirth doesn’t have to be a painful and distressing experience.

Hypnobirthing teaches relaxation, visualisation and self-hypnosis skills to help mothers-to-be create a calm and relaxing environment during labour. Some of the benefits of this technique include a shorter, more comfortable labour without the need for pain relief. It can also lead to a more positive birth experience. To help make sure you get your information from a trusted, respected source, we’ve combined the knowledge and real-life experience of our Mumsnet users with expert sources to help us research the best hypnobirthing books and tools to buy right now, those which can be read alongside the best pregnancy books and top-rated parenting books to help you prepare for labour and the years afterwards.

2. Best hypnobirthing audiobook: Effective Birth Preparation: Hypnobirthing for Birth in a Hospital or Birth Centre by Maggie Howell

Siobhan's advice and guidance will change your mindset and enable you to navigate your birth with practical tools that ensure you feel calm and in control throughout. Siobhan Miller very convincingly argues that this view of childbirth, which we all (men included) soak in from an early age through TV shows and films, gives us a warped idea of childbirth. It primes men to feel like useless spectators, and more importantly it primes women to fear giving birth. That negative feeling can make a difficult birth more likely, causing a vicious cycle of tension that increases pain, that increases fear, that increases tension, etc. Some people struggle to learn the relaxation techniques so allowing yourself plenty of time to practise is better, but if you decide later in the pregnancy that you would like to learn about hypnobirthing you can still practise some of the exercises in time for your birth. Can you teach yourself hypnobirthing? I'm due to have a baby in the next two weeks. This book has some valuable information – breathing techniques, partner-assisted exercises, affirmations, and general birth education that can (hopefully) make for a positive birth experience. However, as promising as the initial birth biology 101 chapters were, Miller's perspective comes off overwhelmingly as anti-hospital propaganda. Boo!

In this book, Siobhan debunks common myths about hypnobirthing and explains why she believes it can make every type of birth a better experience - from a water birth at home to an unplanned caesarean in theatre. Hey I would definitely recommend Hypnobirthing: Practical Ways to Make Your Birth Better by Siobhan Miller (founder of the Positive Birth Company). I also enjoyed The Positive Birth Book by Milli Hill. I was absolutely TERRIFIED of giving birth but both these books have made me feel much more empowered and positive, even a little bit excited now!” (Recommended by Mumsnet user NicNac100) Our verdict
