This is the second Say Cheese and Die book where the protagonist has a skeleton photo nightmare, but is the first one not to be told in the past tense.

Out on a day trip, the Morris family get lost on their way to Zoo Gardens and end up in a theme park called Horrorland which is run by monsters called Horrors.Greg's weight gain happens entirely differently. In the book, Greg wakes up only slightly pudgier, then goes to school and immediately becomes obese while sitting in class, then continually grows fatter and fatter as time goes on. In the episode, however, Greg wakes up very chubby and remains virtually the same size for the next several scenes. The DVD cover of the 2012 rerelease is a recreation of the Classic Goosebumps cover art. There are some differences including a skeletal hand on the ground, no skull in the camera lens, and a purplish night sky compared to the red hue of the cover art.

What renders Spidey such a bizarre character in this narrative is the fact that Stine wrote an entity that glimmers along the water’s edge like a ray while simultaneously floating as a crocodile’s body under the surface. Though Spidey is revealed to be a man who used to be a famed scientist, one that is self-proclaimed as being “very evil”, the actions performed by this man teeter on severely dangerous—whereas they are, perhaps, meant to simply be a bit freaky. Should Spidey not have broken into Greg’s room & gone through all his personal belongings in an act that proves to be at once predatory & insane, I might have felt differently. However, the raving delusions of this adult escalate to a scene where he is chasing two (2) of the children down the street & then has them cornered in the basement of the house telling them that they will never be able to leave. After visiting an abandoned house said to be haunted, Sammy Jacobs soon gets a new friend a boy named Brent whom no one (not even Sammy) can see.

There are a few popular things to come from the books like Slappy the Dummy and Horrorland, the haunted theme park, but there’s no overarching story throughout the books. The original series opted to take the anthology approach that the books did, with each episode telling a self-contained story based on one of the books. For that really is… perfect balance. Since that gives fans of the original, the anthology style of storytelling they crave, while offering them something new to enjoy and new fans of the show… can now understand why their folks loved this series and why it means so much to them. Through exciting stories that also happen to offer up… some solid scares. For this iteration of Goosebumps has evolved for certain, and now features some of the red stuff that the prior one shied away from, alongside visuals that are nightmare inducing. Making this, a perfect premiere, one that was clearly forged in love and a desire to let this iconic franchise live on, and truly, it will be fascinating to see where this amazing series is going to take us as darkness continues to wash over Port Lawrence in the weeks to come.
