About this deal

Rusty feels resentful towards her mother as Peggy doesn't appear to want to get to know her daughter, and instead spends a large portion of her days out working as a mechanic with the Women's Volunteer Service. Rusty's continual clashes with her family, school and culture left me feeling almost depressed sometimes, but I wanted to read on because of her independent, fighting spirit. Modern readers will think that the best, indeed the only, way forward would be divorce, something Rusty mentions to her secret friend Lance in relation to his parents. Her 'adopted' parents helped instill a love of art and woodwork, and her siblings gave some confidence to the very small Virginia who arrived in the States at age 7.

Tom so special, but there is, at times, a little hint that some things are happening purely to advance the plot. Because she has spent the war in America, she is horrified by how poor the people in Britain are and looks down on them for it.

A sad, deprived child, he slowly begins to flourish under the unlikely care of grumpy old Tom Oakley.

She thought he was her only true friend so every night they would sneak out to their "cabin in the woods" and make it their own. The areas where she excels - art, gym, and Greek dance - are soon cancelled in favour of extra Latin and maths revision. There Rusty meets Beatie, the old friendly woman who owns the house, Ivy, a young woman whose first husband is missing, presumed dead, and who is now engaged to an American G. He gets in to trouble for picking flowers from neighbouring gardens, not understanding that the flowers in London are not wild as he is used to. We have just heard that the excellent four-part radio serialisation of Back Home is to be broadcast again on BBC Radio 4 extra starting 7th-11th November at 06. There's points in this where you feel every single step taken by Rusty and, as ever with a Magorian, there will be tears. I've read a sample of this thanks to Penguin UK and it has been a reminder of just why I loved this book so many years ago.
