The Hindu goddess Saraswati asks you to enter her domain of art, language, knowledge, music, and poetry, and make this commitment to go the distance. In October 2017, my publisher asked if I would be interested in doing a goddess-themed Oracle Card deck. An ageless beauty dressed in robes, she floats on a lotus and holds a vase filled with the sweet dew of compassion, which she sprinkles on sufferers’ heads using a sprig of willow.

You are able to see through the curtain of illusions; your clarity and intuition is heightened as your next steps are surefooted. One Sunday in a coaching session, the amazing transformational coach Nancy Levin took me through an intimate process and the goddess Kali showed up, clear as a bell, in my meditation. Though it was a deep and meaningful interaction, I didn’t take it as a sign to include her in the deck.Hope and new life are blossoming everywhere in your life right now, and this is something to celebrate.

The Goddesses in this deck are meant to be represented by their dominant energy and personalities instead of showing them in their classical, cultural forms, so we created non-traditional artistic representations of them. It’s fun when things turn out exactly as you predicted, but remember that the essence of your intention means more than its form. You’re being tasked to carefully choose the direction of your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and actions.I "channel" all my decks, which is like tuning into them creatively and receiving them rather than "making them" intellectually. In fact now is also the perfect time when you can be assured that you can heal rifts with others as well. In addition to these concerns, we were aware that Kali in particular is traditionally depicted in a few different ways (depending on what region of India) so we didn’t think we could recreate her and chose another goddess to represent this dominant energy. She is also honored every year in the Oshun festival, which is held in Osogbo, Nigeria, the sacred place where Oshun and human beings first met.

No matter what question you’ve come to explore, the goddess Saraswati reminds you that the pursuit of mastery is never ending, so enjoy every minute of it. Later, when Jena worked on the photograph of the beautiful Indian woman we chose as our model, she went into a trance state in which Kali guided her to represent her in a specific way. We didn’t want this deck to represent traditional art, but rather to present the essence of these goddesses so everyone, regardless of where they come from, might recognize themselves in surprising ways. For example, my friend Ayesha Ophelia, herself a budding author, popular spiritual teacher, and deck creator, is our Aphrodite and a woman of color. The feminine principle of the Universe was deified as a goddess—the Great Goddess—in a system where woman was the creatrix and embodied the principle of Life. You will be amazed at how deep, meaningful, and respectful your experience becomes in all areas of your life when you make choices from a place of empowered independence. We are wounded by others and weave stories about our hurts and losses that live on in our hearts and minds.
