I was also able to confirm that one overprinted Straits Settlements QV stamp that I had, which I suspected had an inverted watermark did in fact have a normal (i.e. 'verted') watermark after all. The detector showed me that my original (mis)identification was due in part to the watermark being fairly shifted down the stamp, so I wasn't looking at what I thought I was before I validated my results with the Morley. Like Jay says... Benzene (C6H6) is now regarded as so hazardous that it is banned in chemistry research labs, let alone anywhere else. link to USA 1966-1981 Prominent American Coils #1297-1305E category 1966-1981 Prominent American Coils #1297-1305E The Bureau used watermarks until 1916, when World War I demanded further cost cutting. Unwatermarked paper was less expensive than watermarked paper. Additionally, it was determined that the single line watermark was not a deterrent to counterfeiting. Since then, stamps have been printed on unwatermarked paper. The Watermark Irony Years ago, when the world was young, and my ability to manipulate multiple delicate components simultaneously was unlimited I bought a Morley-Bright watermark detector to be able to

I cut two pieces of plastic sheeting (I used painters' drop cloth) and put a drop of caulking between them. I put a stamp underneath and rolled out the caulking--and was able to see the watermark! So this is now at the proof-of-principle stage. Not to sound too cynical, but I have tried some (electronic) devices for watermarks, perforations, etc., and they typically seem to over-promise and under-deliver. That said, I have no experience with this particular device. Silence in the face of adversity is the father of complicity and collusion, the first cousins of conspiracy..

I have a normal flatbed scanner, a Canon Pixma MG5250 combination printer and scanner. It’s a few years old now but is still doing a good job. This is how I set it up for scanning stamps, either the faces or the reverse. Positives: 100% non-damaging (except possibly embossments, but this has yet to happen to me). It's faster than fluids (no drying time). And (for me) the big difference... I can easily take pictures and directly compare several watermarks whenever I want. Can also be used on recess printed stamps, simply place the extra foil supplied with the detector underneath the stamp this helps to soak up the ridges on the stamp aiding detection. When first using the detector try it on a stamp that you know what the waternark design is - this will help you appreciate what you should be looking for when you are looking for those harder to detect watermarks.

The main issue with the “ watermark because of fraud” supposition is timing. The advertisement ran at the end of March/beginning of April. The first watermarked stamp was issued on April 29, 1895. There simply was not enough time between the discovery of the counterfeit and the issuance of the watermark for that to have been the reason. In your Watermark Detector Tray add a small amount of Watermark Fluid, just enough to submerge the stamp. Place the stamp face-down and its watermark should become visible as soon as the stamp is submerged. The stamp shown on the right has a watermarked "S" on it. If a person handled the stamp before it has dried, the corrosive nature of the liquids can eat away at the gum. The same, however, can be said for watermark fluid, which is considered harmless to stamps when the proper directions are followed. The Stamp Must Be Left In Near Identical Condition This electronic stamp watermark detector is extremely very efficient with engraved stamps, such as the 1950 posthorn stamps of Germany. As to the U.S. Single and Double Line Watermarks, keep in mind that if there is only a little “dash” of the “U, S or P” left at the corner of the stamp or in the perforation of the stamp, this is ALL you are going to see. One question many people have is “ why would anyone counterfeit stamps or try and reuse them?” The answer to that is simple economics. Before stamps, postage was prohibitively expensive for most people, and sending one letter often costed an entire day’s pay. Making Postage Affordable The issue is that watermarks, at least in the USA and Europe, have not been used in official postage stamps for more than a century, except for some commemorative stamps. So, the stamps with watermarks would not have the luminescent ink and the stamps with luminescent ink would not have the watermarks. How To Tell If A Stamp Has A Watermark Using Regular Light In response, postal organizations produced new and inventive ways to thwart the cheats.
