About this deal

And while I don’t inherently consider inspiring ANY sort of human feeling as evidence of merit, I think in this case it sort of was. Vacations spent at Black Rabbit Hall—a magical place where slates flying off the roof don’t matter because the stars shine more brightly near the stormy sea—were the highlight of the children’s lives. Much too soon for Amber's taste, this icy woman, Caroline Shawcross, and her dark son, Lucian, have ensconced themselves into their lives, with devastating effects.

This is the title I was most looking forward to in my “Most anticipated titles of 2016” blog post and I was not disappointed! A deliciously intriguing novel whose rich sense of time and place bear more than a few echoes of du Maurier’s best. For fans of Kate Morton and Sarah Waters, here's a magnetic debut novel of wrenching family secrets, forbidden love, and heartbreaking loss housed within the grand gothic manor of Black Rabbit Hall.Alive with the magic of Amsterdam, the enchanting new historical novel from the author of the sensational New York Times bestseller The Miniaturist , which has sold more than two million copies. Eve Chase is the author of Black Rabbit Hall and The Wildling Sisters, and the pseudonym of journalist and novelist Polly Williams. What secrets does Black Rabbit Hall hold, and will Lorna find out what the secrets of the Alton family are as she explores the Alton's summer home? With its riverside location and views out over the wetlands, you’re sure to forget about the world when you settle into your seat. Within the secrets of it’s halls two women’s lives in different time periods cross bringing (main character) Lorna the answers she’s needed but never received from her adopted mother.

Resplendent with atmosphere and all of the things that make for good fiction, love, heartbreak, bitterness, guilt, loss, and regret – this novel is an auspicious debut for Eve Chase. Amber Alton knows that the hours pass differently at Black Rabbit Hall, her London family’s Cornish country estate where no two clocks read the same. You can put yourself into every scene of the story and clearly picture what is happening and carried out. It is a sorry little worm's view of the off-beat of adult pressure, of contemporary strictures and conformity, of sentiment….

Lorna is convinced that this is the same mansion she and her mother visited together when Lorna was a child, and despite Jon pointing out the house's many leaks, crumbling plaster, and overgrown gardens, Lorna is enchanted by its romantic ambience, its beauty, and, most importantly, the fact that she feels a mysterious emotional connection to the place. Now, three decades later, a bride to be is anxiously exploring venues for her wedding day with fiancé Jon tagging along. We take pride in offering a wide selection of used books, from classics to hidden gems, ensuring there? This is tender and true, and impossible, in its picture of the old hells of young boys, the lonesomeness and tentative attempts to be mature and secure, the awful block between youth and being grown-up, the fright and sickness that humans and their behavior cause the challenging, the dramatization of the big bang.

From the description on the back of the book I was expecting a more substantial supernatural theme, or even actual supernatural goings on. From the creepy characters, the tragic events, the unrelenting suspense, to the ruinous hall and the isolated setting beside dark woodlands, high cliff edges, and rolling sea, this book is deliciously dark and enthralling. Oddly enough, an old Cornwall house on the list of possibilities, peaks Lorna’s interest, not only because she loves old houses, but because she has some fragmented memories of having visited there with her mother, who recently passed away. But as she’s drawn deeper into the overgrown grounds, half-buried memories of her mother begin to surface and Lorna soon finds herself ensnared within the manor’s labyrinthine history, overcome with an insatiable need for answers about her own past and the once-happy family whose memory still haunts the estate.
