About this deal

Bolland has contributed covers – in many cases to complete runs/arcs – to comics since the 1990s, with his photo-realistic work on the titles for which he works as the primary external reference image. During my five years in three art schools I never learnt a single thing about comics from any of my tutors.

stemmed from a suggestion by Josh Palmano (owner of Gosh Comics in London, and also involved in publishing company Knockabout Comics) to collect all instances of Bolland's two strips and Steve Moore's "Zirk" story.R. Martin's Wild Cards anthologies [30]) and magazine covers (including Time Out [10] and every major comics publication). With the (post-Morrison) move of Animal Man to DC's new 'Mature Readers' imprint Vertigo, Bolland notes that the covers moved to full color paintings with issue No. For DC's Vertigo imprint, Bolland has done covers for The Invisibles, Jack of Fables, and a number of one-shots and miniseries.

In 2006's The Art of Brian Bolland, he does suggest that "I trace my mild bondage fetish back to a book of Bible stories that must have been given to my father as a Sunday school gift when he was a child," wherein "was a picture of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednigo [sic]. was new and unproven but at least it was a chance to draw something other than football, war or cowboy stuff that was all that was available up to now. Gibbons joined Carlos Ezquerra in "jumping into 2000AD feet first with issue 1 (or Programme, later Prog 1).

Starting in 1997, Bolland bought a lot of software and spent ten frustrated months learning the ropes and ultimately finding the liberating ability to adapt his now-solely-onscreen artwork. By the end of 1977 Brian Bolland was regularly handling art chores for John Wagner's scripts on Judge Dredd. I usually conceive my books myself, but on several occasions the publisher has come to me with the concept, and so it was that in May, 2020, Rebellion sent me an innocent-sounding e-mail asking if I could help track down Brian Bolland’s 2000 AD artwork for an Artist's Edition type book (dubbed an Apex Edition for the sake of distinction). I’m not a fan of jerky slow frame-rate manga-style animation and I’ve never heard a Joker voice that’s how I hear it in my head.

From paper choices to ink choices and the hand-binding required for such a large tome, this is a fascinating look into the process of this landmark book. The Art of Brian Bolland also features a separate "Nudes" section, mostly created for the purpose of experimenting with different inking techniques or practicing figures from a difficult angles. In the case of The Invisibles, however, although Morrison officially had final approval on cover art, Bolland described him as generous to the work Bolland came up with. Although his forays into interior artwork are almost universally acclaimed, Bolland is now far more commonly seen as 'just' a cover artist – although he notes that he has never decided to actually solely create covers, having merely explored other jobs from strip work. Bearing in mind the 8-hour time difference I rang up a Resident and he said you have to hit Apple and Q at the same time. As 2000 AD's most popular artist, Brian’s art was particularly prized and most persistently stolen, and, to this day, certain strips, including his first Judge Death serial, have never surfaced again.

Gribbons creates an army of sentient corporate mascots through his experiments on human brain matter, including the Jolly Green Giant. Such widespread exposure had its downside, when the original artwork went missing, meaning that later reprints of Mamoulian had to be made from Bolland's photocopies. He would find a scene from the interior art that appeared to make for a good cover, or use a hook on the cover that outlined the plot of the issue. Everything I’ve ever written has its own reason and origin and there isn’t time to explain everything here. Working in British comics publishing since the 1980s, his credits include editor of titles such as Doctor Who Magazine, Babylon 5 Magazine, and more.
