About this deal

Just as with whisky, the flavour can vary considerably, based on a wide range of factors – from the raw ingredients used to local methods of production and ageing. In Jamaica, for instance, pot stills typically produce golden and darker rums, while in Cuba columns are usually used to create a lighter spirit. How much can I spend on a bottle of rum? Chairman’s Reserve Legacy. Saint Lucia Distillers (SLD) have been very busy these past few years. Rapidly expanding their rum portfolio, especially in the export market. Building upon the Chairman’s Reserve name in the shape of a continuous 1931 release, they have also released several single casks and limited edition rums under the Chairman’s Reserve banner. On the nose it is sweet and slightly floral with notes of pine cone and sweet soft toffee. This moves into wafts of vanilla, just a touch of hazelnut and some oak spice. It’s not a big hefty nose but it’s got a really nice balance to it. It’s approachable and there is nothing which is off putting. Nice notes of toasted pineapple and a bit of passion fruit also come to the fore.

There’s a huge range of prices too, from affordable bottles costing under 20 quid right up to exclusive rums that cost hundreds of pounds. What types of rum are there? Rum is loosely defined as any spirit made from sugar – either cane juice or molasses (a byproduct of sugar production). In practice, the vast majority is made from molasses, with golden and darker rums aged in oak to develop their unique characteristics. Most rum production happens in the Caribbean and Latin America, but it’s made right across the world – in Scotland, Thailand, USA, New Zealand, India and Mauritius, just to name a few. Does all rum have a similar taste? SLD have also introduced further expressions, to the Admiral Rodney range, as well as introducing the Bounty rum brand to Europe. This latest release, Chairman’s Reserve Legacy, sets out to commemorate the pioneering work undertaken by former “Chairman” Laurie Barnard – forever RIP. Finally, there’s spiced rum, which – as the name suggests – is made by adding various spices to a golden rum base. How should you drink rum? During the first weeks of August, a panel of industry professionals in each country (Saint Lucia, United States, & Europe) will select 15 finalists total to move on to Phase Three. These 15 finalists will be announced on August 21st and will compete in a live remote international competition on September 6th, in which they will virtually present their rum to an esteemed panel of international judges. Finalists MUST be available and flexible on September 6th and while we will do our best to coordinate the timing of the live virtual event, depending on the location of finalists, the competition hours may be in the morning or at night. This virtual event will be open to the public for viewing. Concluding the competition, we will announce three winners: one from the USA, one from Saint Lucia, and one from Europe.

On the whole, the rum category is experiencing a boom at the moment – this past summer, data showed that more than a quarter of Brits are choosing rum-based drinks over beer. I have been looking forward to sample and review this rum for some time. My previous experience with Chairman’s Reserve rums consist of the “Original” blend (which I did not like), “The Forgotten Casks” (which I enjoyed) and the “1931 3rd edition” (which I did not care for as a result of the 12 g/L of added sugar in the blend). Rather than the cut out style box of the “Masters Selection” rums, we are treated to a “full” box to house the Chairman’s Reserve Legacy. There is a write up about Laurie Barnard and his legacy on the rear of the box as well. WOW, what a pleasant Sipper this rum is. This rum is an EXCELLENT product which will require that I acquire many more bottles to add to my supply/collection.

Chairman's Reserve 1931 Details

MATURATION:Five and six year old rum is tropically aged separately by batch and still type in ex-bourbon barrels before being expertly blended.

All have been aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The percentages attached represent their contribution to the overall blend. The rum is quite a dark not navy or demerara rum dark but definitely darker than say a Mount Gay or Bacardi Gold. The extra ageing is noticeable. This is without the doubt the most difficult rum review I have done so far. When I first got into rum this was the first rum I bought online. MATURATION: Aged separately by batch and type of still in ex-Bourbon barrels, then blended and rested in oak vats for an additional six months. Average age of the blend is 5 years.BLEND AND MATURATION: A seamless blend of Coffey and pot still rums aged from 6 to 11 years in Bourbon and Port casks. The majority of the 1931 blend comes from traditional molasses rum, while the hidden spunk of the spirit is influenced by the inclusion of Lucian agricultural rum produced from fresh sugarcane growing in the fields adjacent to the distillery. It’s difficult not to biased with regard this rum. It was the rum which made me realise just how good rum could be. It convinced me that a more expensive rum could actually be worth the extra money. It’s the bottle that led me to write and set up this blog. Over two years on I find it amazing that I’m sitting sipping this rum (I’ll add cola soon don’t worry) and contemplating just how I’m going to actually review it. Anyway here goes………. nutmeg. It is note quite as medicinal as some SLD output. Say a 100% Vendome Pot Still but it carries those notes as well. You must create enough of your original spiced rum to fill one 700ml bottle (included in Chairman’s Reserve Spice Kit)

MATURATION:The original Chairman's Reserve recipe is matured an additional three years in ex-bourbon barrels after blending, for a soft elegant blend of rum from 8-11 years old. Luggers won a gold award at the 2019 International Spirits Challenge in the flavoured or spiced category, and once you try it, you’ll understand why. If you’re a fan of slightly sweet, yet incredibly complex rums, this deserves a place in your drinks cabinet. It’s like drinking Christmas, except it’s as enjoyable in the sun as it is on a cold night. Laurie Barnard, the late "Chairman" of St. Lucia Distillers, inspired and created the iconic brand Chairman's Reserve in 1999. His vision to define and reinvent the Saint Lucian rum category was unlike anything rum had seen before or has seen since. While other distilleries were purchasing column stills to increase production, Laurie was investing in eclectic barrel types, small pot stills, a proprietary yeast strain, and sugarcane. He believed that the best rum was not achieved from one barrel but by blending different components together of different ages, finishes, styles, and base materials. Laurie wanted to see a blender being able to use a variety of different rums from different stills and aged in different types of wood. A palette of rums, if you like. By 1999, Saint Lucia Distillers had such a palette in place and they released a rum which is now enjoyed in over 60 different countries – Chairman’s Reserve Finest Saint Lucia Rum. Two years ago we took our first foray into Saint Lucia’s Chairman’s Reserve brand. Today we have another round with the Chairman, including both the mainline “Original” as well as the brand’s spiced rum.

The pot still rum in the blend is notable here, offering a punchy but not overwhelming hogo note on the nose, alongside notes of baking spice, burnt caramel, and some fresh-poured asphalt. That grittiness translates well to the palate, which comes across as a bit more austere and serious than the typical bottling, but which finds beautiful complements in the form of tropical pineapple and dark chocolate notes, both of which grow more intense as the rum develops in the glass. A lightly smoky character emerges with further time to coalesce, though it finishes with a note of banana and a pinch of spice.
