Alex Mcauley: Main antagonist of Double Cross, a crime boss in a war with the Dowds. He tries to make Tobey join him, but is killed by Dan, who replaces him. Minerva "Minnie" Hadley: Sephy's older sister; she and Sephy are not very close, as Minnie is often shown to be quite selfish. She marries an affluent Cross, Zuri, and they have a son, Taj. Short story in the multi-author collection The Crew and Other Teen Fiction, Heinemann Library, ISBN 0-431-01875-8 Society appears to be very different now. For the first time ever, a Nought Prime Minister - Tobey Durbridge - is in power. Race and class don't divide people anymore. But things are never really that easy. Tied into this story are the characters of Libby and Troy. Libby has lived her life surrounded by hatred and contempt. She gets some rather unexpected news, but isn’t prepared for what that brings. Troy is Callie’s much younger brother. His family links also place him in danger. When the two students are kidnapped we can’t help but wonder how much family ties will bind people to a decision.

Years have passed since the love between Sephy - a Cross - and Callum - a Nought - destroyed their world and changed their families and society forever. Society appears to be very different now. For the first time ever, a Nought Prime Minister - Tobey Durbridge - is in power. Race and class don't divide people anymore. But things are never really that easy. Because Tobey's just been framed for murder, and the only way to free himself is to turn to his oldest friend - Callie-Rose. Their families divisions run deep, and when two young people are kidnapped, their lives and everything they've fought for are put in the firing line. Accused of a murder he insists he did not commit, Tobey asks his teenage sweetheart Callie-Rose to defend him. The two have a complicated history and, it transpires, an even more complicated – and dangerous – present, and they take it in turns to tell their side of a highly dramatic story. In his resulting depression, Tobey briefly joins Nought Forever, the Liberation Militia's spiritual successor, but soon quits. Tobey pursues a career in politics and is aided and bankrolled by Dan, now a powerful gangster. He uses his growing fortune to financially support Misty and Libby, but Misty refuses to let him see their daughter and conceals his identity from Libby. She gradually spends Libby's entire trust fund, becoming an alcoholic and drug addict, and abuses Libby, who struggles with anxiety and self-harm. The first book is written from two different perspectives – Callum's and Sephy's (Persephone) – and their experiences of their entwined but very different worlds. The chapters alternate, with even chapters being Callum's and odd ones Sephy's.Realising that Sephy wishes to die, he decides that killing her would help her, and opts to leave Sephy to suffering. He gives Sephy permission to call an ambulance for Minerva and tells her that since he knows how much she cares for her family, he will use her baby to hurt her. Sephy threatens to kill him if he hurts her child, but resorts to pleading with Jude to leave the two of them alone. He leaves just as the ambulance arrives, with a new plan in mind; Sephy makes Minerva lie about her injuries. Libby - the daughter of Tobey, abducted along with troy. Tensions are high between them, with them both being strong willed and stubborn. The Guardian ranked Noughts & Crosses #88 in its list of 100 Best Books of the 21st Century. [15] Awards and nominations [ edit ]

During the party, Tobey has sex with a woman named Misty, who becomes pregnant and gives birth to Tobey's daughter Libby. Girl Wonder's Winter Adventures (illustrated by Lis Toft), Orion Children's Books, 1992, ISBN 0-575-05383-6She is also a writer whose own life has been shaped by books, from her childhood in south London, the daughter of parents who moved to Britain from Barbados as part of the Windrush Generation, and who experienced a childhood that was both wonderful and marred by the everyday racism and bigotry of the era. She was told she could not apply to study her first love, literature, at university, in spite of her academic potential, but found a way to books and to a life in writing against a number of obstacles. He keeps this a secret from Callie Rose, and after they consummate their relationship, Callie Rose leaves but promises to return. The next day, when Tobey and Callie Rose meet up with their friends, Callie Rose is shot by a hail of bullets from McAuley, the boss of a gang of Noughts, the rivals to the Dowds. Her surgery is successful, but she remains in a coma. Sephy is furious at Tobey for not telling the police who shot Callie Rose, but is unaware that Tobey plans on getting revenge on McAuley himself. I was excited to read this when it first came out, but once I finished it, I found myself disappointed.

We have Callie, now 30, a lawyer preparing to be a judge. She still regrets her behaviour as a teenager when she let jealousy get the better of her. Her feelings for her boyfriend Tobey were complicated, but even more so now. Tobey is about to become the first Nought Prime Minister, but he is accused of murdering a well-known businessman thought to have underground links. He wants Callie to represent him. During the next three months Libby is elected head student of Heathcroft High, and she and Troy form a sibling relationship and undergo therapy for their experiences, while Callie Rose considers starting a career in politics. And another groundbreaking children's novelist R.J Palacio, author of Wonder, shares her own childhood favourite in The Book I'd Never Lend. The two are then surprised by the rest of the gang, and Jude and Callum point their guns at each other; Sephy takes advantage of the confusion to flee. The story ends with Callum and Jude shooting at each other. The Nought and Crosses saga (which I think we can totally go there now with three generations of both) is one of those stories that has all of the above and more.Ryan McGregor: Callum, Jude, and Lynette's father, who is killed trying to escape from prison after the Dundale bombing.
