About this deal

I do sometimes carry a hardshell (ME Kongur) if the forecast looks particularly abysmal, but I know if I put it on my Buffalo will soon be saturated underneath it so would use to only for being static in a downpour. Many of the items we sell will come with the full manufacturer's guarantee. SMU, Ex Display and production products are covered under these conditions. It essentially comes in two parts. There’s the outer Pertex Shield waterproof shell, then there’s a removable inner liner (the insulation). This liner includes a divider for your index finger which adds some points for overall dexterity. Overall, however, the the high-loft fleece lining does still make this mitt a lot less dexterous than a glove. That’s generally a given though.

Gore-Tex / Pittards Atacama Goat leather / further Pittards reinforcement / PrimaLoft Gold – 60g/m2. The idea of carrying two gloves is to keep the warmer pair as dry as possible. When winter climbing, on particularly wet days, I’ll travel with a third pair that I can switch over at belay stances, or when my main gloves become a little too damp to perform.Aside from the choice between a mitt or a glove, insulation also has a big influence on how dexterous a glove is. In short, more insulation equals more warmth, but that trade off is a less flexible glove. You’ll have an idea yourself how much insulation you require. Designed to allow flexibility, the arms have been articulated with fine microfleece inner arm panels to prevent pile constructing over elbows and biceps, and an adjustable hem too prevents spindrift entry and heat loss. A removable crotch strap also prevents hem lift when you reach up high. The main downside to it is the price but then if you really suffer from cold digits throughout the day, perhaps you’ll find it money well spent. I’d otherwise argue that you’ll be slightly better suited going for some of the slightly lower cost variants in this roundup. PrimaLoft Gold insulation / Pertex Shield / Kevlar stitching / split-finger lining / BDry waterproof insert.

We imagine that this will begin to soften off over time as we use the glove over a longer period, but still, it might be worth considering sizing up here. The cuffs have a snug fit which is perfect if you’re wearing mitts as they slide over the cuff with ease. Nothing more annoying than having your sleeves bunching up! Faults deemed to have been caused by misuse or improper care (including washing not in accordance with the product wash care instructions) are not covered by the guarantee. Rab’s own attempt to uphold the reputation of the guide name has the classic shape of the ‘gauntlet’ style glove, with a long cuff to keep any snow and water from leaking into your wrists. It’s been given a little toughening up with reinforcement in the palm and thumb, providing sustained durability and the potential to really abuse it. You can definitely feel this when handling and using the gloves, more so than with something like the Salewa Ortles which is also featured in this round-up. One feature that’s kind of ‘meh’ is the helmet-compatible hood. I’m not a mountaineer and have no plans to scale vast, freezing peaks. Far too high and scary. But those of you brave mountain climbers will find the hood provides ample room for a helmet. If you intend to use the Extreme for hiking, or treks, I recommend you adjust it down to a snug fit before you set off. Why?

Online, there seem to be a fair number of enthusiastic users in the bushcraft community, but I've never even seen a video of anyone wearing one of these pieces of clothing to climb in.(I've watched probably 100+ Youtube videos of climbing in Scotland, which is supposedly where these garments work well, and nobody was wearing them.)I've never met anyone who has owned a pertex/pile piece, and most people I've talked with don't even know they exist.
