About this deal

Laura’s drawn to similar narratives but for her it’s all about the victims, something that’s rooted in a traumatic incident from her childhood.

It landed with a splash, readers taken with the author’s ingenious double locked-room murder mystery, which played well on one of the oldest formats in the genre. It felt so fresh and sharp, expertly plotted and also emotionally charged, comic but also pitch-black dark.Fresh, funny, and brilliantly dissecting modern-day book culture, this dream debut is twisted in all the right ways.

When Laura Bunting, a fellow bookseller transfers to her branch as a part of a team headed by a new manager, Roach discovers a copy of a true crime book in her bag (which she unashamedly rifles through in Laura’s absence) and believes she has found a kindred spirit.

In this "utterly unforgettable" debut (Catherine Ryan Howard), a disaffected, true crime-obsessed bookseller develops a dangerous obsession with a colleague. Surprisingly, for a book with such a high rating, neither Laura nor Roach are particularly likeable characters in the novel. But beneath the shiny veneer, Roach senses a darkness within Laura, the same darkness Roach possesses. Overall, a very self-aware novel with vivid characters and an interesting take on true crime as a genre - I would highly recommend getting this on your 'to be read' list for next year!

We read their story from both POV’s, and the similarity between their stories becomes gradually known. Alice Slater has written a novel that sinks in its teeth and refuses to let go; I buzzed for days after finishing it. Beautifully written and dark as Satan's basement, Death of a Bookseller will have you looking over your shoulder long after the last page is turned. Clever, funny, beautifully written and as dark as a goth's shadow, this is the book I will be recommending to everyone this year. A darkly funny story about a serial killer obsessed bookseller who has a disturbing infatuation with a coworker. The development of both of the characters was great, the story is a thriller told through a joint POV. She lost her virginity to this guy and then he asks her all of these disgusting innappropriate questions and she just tells him what he wants to hear. Although Fisk was a well-known but not always popular character in the book collecting world, none of his rival runners, collectors or dealers immediately stands out as a likely killer.
