About this deal

The reason I bring up that comparison is because at least one comment was concerned this is something only brought up for young up and coming women, and that is simply not the case. Nothing special whatsoever in terms of language and writing style (I feel like I could’ve written it? It also represented the greatest single loss of life on the tube system, but curiously didn’t involve a train or vehicle of any description - 173 were killed including 62 children with over 60 injured. After a chance encounter with Ray, an American airman stationed nearby, Nellie becomes enchanted with the idea of a broader world.

I was flying while reading most of the book and two separate flight attendants asked me if I was ok because I was in tears multiple times at the profoundly devastating events that unfold. I think Millie Bobby Brown is a beautiful young woman who has made a name for herself, but I can’t stop thinking about the many upcoming authors who lost their spot to a rich person. I don’t know, I’m not a fan of big names taking credit for what should be someone else’s intellectual property. It’s an event so powerful that it’s hard to believe it hasn’t been the subject of a novel — or film — previously.Nineteen Steps is a deeply affecting, mesmerizing page-turner inspired by the author’s family history. We’d go walking through Victoria Park, we’d visit the memorial [for the tube tragedy], and walk down Roman Road, getting lunch, so these places are part of my childhood too.

Despite the raging war, spirited 18-year-old Nellie Morris lives a quiet life in the tight-knit East End community of Bethnal Green. Most locals preferred it to other nearby shelters because there was such a sense of community spirit. The closest air raid shelter is the disused Bethnal Green Tube station, where many people were able to comfortably stay the night. One of the most tragic realizations was that the sirens that led to the crush were a test — there was no actual threat of an air raid that night. Even the closest family can't escape the devastation of war, and as the secrets and truth about that fateful night become clear, they threaten to tear Nellie – and those dearest to her – apart.

This book made me think of my grandparents and great grandparents, who sadly had to go through so many wars and who probably felt similar feelings as described in this book.
