If you look at the Facebook posts about Santa Montefiore's books, it is usually the ladies who read them. But sporadically, a male reader also appears. Like myself. Santa Montefiore heeft zich laten inspireren door de ervaringen van Simon Jacobs, een oude vriend en ze schrijft in het nawoord dat ze samen aan dit boek hebben gewerkt. Ze heeft dit boek snel geschreven: normaal schrijft ze in 6 maanden een boek, nu deed ze er 2 maanden over. Maar dat betekent niet dat het afgeraffeld is. Juist niet. Het boek is tot in de puntjes afgewerkt. Zoals de (te!) ruime achterflap tekst al weergeeft, wordt Wacht op mij voornamelijk verteld vanuit twee perspectieven en tijdslijnen. Het derde perspectief van de bejaarde Florence komt miniem aan bod. Haastig volgden ze het pad door de siertuin, en vandaar naar beneden, naar de kade waar de zee, weids en gitzwart als olie, glansde onder de rode sikkel van de maan. Opgewonden, met een gevoel alsof elke seconde telde, trok Florence haar schoenen uit en rende ze het strand op. Toen ze besefte dat het uit kiezels bestond, bleef ze staan om haar schoenen weer aan te trekken. Maar Rupert was net zo ongeduldig als zij. Hij sloeg zijn armen om haar heen, tilde haar op en liep met haar tot buiten het bereik van de lantaarns. There is nothing I love more than a big, historical fiction book to sink into when I’m faced with a rainy weekend. The only thing that could make it better is know that the book is the first of a trilogy and that if the other two are as good as the first I have a lot of great reading ahead of me. I have been on a wonderful reading run lately and I hope it continues. Santa Montefiore schrijft al jaren vele romans. Deze romans spelen zich af in Engeland, Ierland en vele andere delen van de wereld. Dit boek speelt zich grotendeels af in Groot Brittannië met kleine uitstapjes naar Australië en Nederland. There are some great characters in the novel. I liked Kitty very much. She seemed to be the sanest one of her family. Her mother is one of the coldest most unfeeling women I ever read. Kitty's grandparents are adorable even if her grandfather does go off the deep end from time to time. Er passeren zoveel personages de revue dat het niet mogelijk is om hen allemaal te vernoemen. De levens van alle personages worden met elkaar verweven en gaan op een bepaald moment elk hun eigen weg om dan aan het einde van het boek terug samen te komen.
