Taking into account the premise, I should have liked Hell’s Paradise more than I actually did, although the art style, messy panels, and Gabimaru (there was something about him I just couldn’t “dig” - if that’s the right word) all made this a fair 3 star read. Of course, with criminals being unleashed on this island all with same goal, there’s bound to be some chaos. We got some brief glimpses of this in the first volume with some criminals forming alliances while others attempted and some succeeded to kill off their competition. But, it seems that the other criminals are the last of their worries with the introduction of that monster at the end of Volume 1. The island is full of unknown terrors, and the mystery it holds keeps me reading, but it’s the emotional moments you get from characters, like Gabimaru and Sagiri, that have me hooked even more. One of its major appeals is the sheer amount of violence that occurs in this series, but the story is never sacrificed by any means. As a result, Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is one of my favorite manga releases to debut this year and I’m excited to catch up on the volumes that have been released so far! I would say that these series was very gore and very graphic but its very character driven. I liked that its straight to the point, has little filler scenes and just straight up introduced the character and his drive to be a "person". I already liked Gabimaru. He's a bit funny and quirky but he's super powerful despite his small size. The setting is during the time where ninjas and samurais are, and it made the story extra fun. For now, I would say I'm actually invested in the series. Honestly can't wait for the rest of the volumes but definitely can't binge read this, cause its a tad heavy.

In this section, we are going to bring you an overview of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku manga arcs at a glance The rest of the cast is not as well developed, but they do all make a good impression. Most of the criminals are nicely distinct in attitude and motivation, making them at least interesting to watch. A personal favorite is one character who was sentenced to death because he embarrassed his clan leader. After he gets his pardon, he wants to get revenge, not by killing the leader, but by cutting his mansion in half. The other Asaemon members are not as developed, and some are gone before the end of the book. Itll be interesting to see what becomes of them as the story goes on.He was right. The first volume gets right into with Gabimaru the Hollow and his repeated failed executions. For a man who is calm about dying, his body is resistant to it. Yamada Asaemon Sagiri is an executioner who specializes in decapitating. She is there is to observe and document. Their fates become entwined when Gabimaru agrees to a mission to find 'the elixir of Life' and get a pardon for his crimes and Sagiri is his minder who if he goes sideways, she will execute him. Retrieved May 14, 2023.Many heads roll in the first volume of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, and while it’s an absolute bloodbath through and through, it’s not your average, run-of-the-mill horror manga. With fantasy, lore, and a character that’s seeking redemption, there is plenty of substance mixed throughout the carnage. It’s clever, psychologically stimulating, and extremely well-executed. The latter being quite ironic, because Gabimaru’s execution didn’t go well at all. Even though I’m months behind its release, I am glad I finally got around to giving this one a chance.
