About this deal

You’ve also got to know yourself; how you react to pressure; how you react if the defence doesn’t work well or how you react to players that are a bit difficult and you’ve got to be able to control your own feelings,” Larder explains. “You’re not necessarily always smiling, but making sure there’s always a positive aura about you.” Gatland: 'Wiganers are a bit mad' Lions Record: Playing 1989, Coaching 2001. The 1989 tour to Australia saw Robinson play 6 matches but no tests on the tour. He did manage to score two tries on the tour. Robinson also played in the unofficial test match against France in Paris in 1989. Andy Robinson also toured with the 2001 Lions as Assistant Coach to Graham Henry. Being at Leicester is a little bit different but I tend to stay down one or two nights a week. It allows me to get a lot of work done during the evenings and spend some time with the other coaches who stay down here as well. We’re able to talk shop, so it’s been a really enjoyable journey so far for me. I came here for the challenge and I certainly got one. Bob joined the SRU on a part time basis in 1998 and since 2000 has attended every tournament that Scotland have been in including the World Cup Campaign in 2003.

When I walked into their review of the match against Australia, I looked at Martin Johnson. At 6ft 7in, he was much taller than anyone I’d coached before. Darren Garforth was 6ft wide and stubby. I’d never coached anyone like that before, either. Richard first joined up with the England team prior to the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia to much the derision of Clive Woodward’s over cautiousness. However, his presence and experience paid off when the England team found themselves with disciplinary problems on the tour. Richards advice and experience will again be on hand if the Lions find themselves in a similar situation. The way Shaun organises France’s defence, every rugby league coach has to think like that – so there’s plenty that have something to offer.” Larder has written two books on coaching rugby league – The Rugby League Skills Manual, published in 1983 and The Rugby League Coaching Manual, published in 1988. Andy Robinson had appointed me, had appointed Joe Lydon and everyone else, but we got fired. Nobody in the coaching team could believe that he was hanging in there. How can you do the job and how can you get the respect of the people who are playing for you or coaching for you?"Lions Record: Appointed Commercial Director of the British & Irish Lions in 2002, he progressed to Acting CEO and finally on to CEO in February 2003. Larder’s pedigree in the game is vast after playing rugby union at centre for Broughton Park in Manchester and then Sale Sharks. He then transferred to rugby league, playing for home town club Oldham and later Whitehaven. Not only did ‘Sir Kev’ help the Tigers to their first Premiership title for nine years last season, they also achieved the unprecedented distinction of topping the table after every round of the campaign. The list of ex-league greats to have made their mark as a union coach is endless – Phil Larder, Edwards, Farrell, Mike Ford, Graham Steadman, Paul Deacon, Mike Forshaw and Martin Gleeson. A former Director of Coaching for Rugby League in England, Larder also spent seven years as assistant coach to the Great Britain side.

When we reached the final and beat Australia in Sydney, I had the opportunity to redeem myself. As a result Clive was knighted and I received the MBE.” Larder agrees. “Aspects of league are still superior in terms of skill but if you watch Andy’s teams, the influence he’s had with Ireland, it’s remarkable,” he says. He told Rugby League Live: “Kevin has got so many options that he go as a chief executive, head coach, skills coach or a defence coach. RU persuaded me to jump ships and Clive Woodward inspired me when he said his goal was to win the RU World Cup.The upcoming Six Nations will have Sinfield as England defence coach with Mike Forshaw, another former rugby league player, embarking on the same job for Wales. France have the inimitable Shaun Edwards and Farrell is at the helm of Ireland. 'I'd never coached anyone as big as Martin Johnson' He later coached Widnes, Sheffield and Keighley, wrote the RFL Coaching Manual and coached Great Britain to the 1995 Rugby League World Cup Final, in which the World Cup went to Australia.

Rugby league coaches landing jobs in union, usually to look after defence, is far from unusual – think Shaun Edwards (whose star has never aligned with England’s), Phil Larder (Woodward’s World Cup-winning assistant), Dave Ellis, Andy Farrell, Mike Ford, Les Kiss and Denis Betts. He played rugby union as a centre for Broughton Park, playing regularly in the first team by the age of 16. He later played for Manchester and Sale, and became known as a particularly good sevens player.

Be a more effective, more successful rugby coach

Clive gave us all objectives," said Larder this week. "Ours included bringing a couple of rugby league players in. Joe went his way, I went mine, watching matches, looking at a lot of youngsters, but I'm not brilliant at looking at a 19- or 20-year-old and saying that in three years' time he's going to be the best in the world in another sport." Larder found the travelling required to play rugby union incompatible with his work at Saddleworth, so moved to rugby league, where games were concentrated in the north of England. He was first approached by Leigh but opted to sign for Oldham ( Heritage № 705). He played in Oldham's defeat by St. Helens in the 1968 Lancashire Cup final, and later moved to Whitehaven. [4] Coaching career [ edit ] Rugby league [ edit ] Sinfield had a stint in rugby union playing for Yorkshire Carnegie at the end of his playing career but has never coached in the 15-a-side game. The Lancastrian still lives in his native Oldham, as he did during his playing career at Leeds, but has overnight stays in Leicester during the week. Sinfield explained: “Everyone in Oldham treats me like they did when I was a kid.

Larder, who coached England at the 1995 World Cup and then took charge of Great Britain for the 1996 tour to New Zealand, will work alongside the club’s existing coaches, Rhys Lovegrove and Paul Royston. Lions Record: Playing 1974 & 1977, Coaching 1989, 1993 & 1997. Toured South Africa on victorious 1974 tour playing 14 matches including 4 test matches. 1977 tour to New Zealand saw Geechs make 16 appearances for the Lions including all four test matches and the one off test against Fiji on the way home. Ian captained the Lions on two provincial matches in New Zealand. He also played in the Queens Silver Jubilee unofficial game against the Barbarians in 1977. Geechs Lions coaching career began in 1989 with the victorious tour to Australia winning 2-1. This was followed by a losing tour to New Zealand four years later and was then followed up with a successful tour to South Africa in 1997 resulting in a 2-1 win for the Lions. Having played professionally for Glasgow, Gavin moved into Technical Analysis upon retirement and has been working as the Video Analyst for Glasgow and the Scottish RFU since 2002. Alongside Tony, his experience will be vital to ensure that all aspects of a technical nature will be covered throughout the tour. Dave “Otis” Reddin has worked with the England team as fitness coach since 1997. Dave will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the fitness and conditioning regimes required to keep the squad in top condition for the tour.

Rugby World Cup News

Legendary former Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield has played down suggestions he could one day follow Shaun Edwards and Andy Farrell by coaching rugby union at international level. Sinfield is proving a resounding success in the 15-a-side code after quitting as director of rugby at Headingley in the summer of 2021 to become defence coach at Leicester Tigers. Former Great Britain coach Phil Larder is returning to rugby league with Keighley at the age of 74. He could just go and take his wide range of rugby league skills to Leicester because he’s got so much to offer. Dave has worked with the RFU since 2002 as their Kit Technician and his experience with the team on their World Cup campaign in 2003 will stand him in good stead for the tour. Larder, part of Sir Clive Woodward's support staff when England lifted the Rugby World Cup in 2003, teams up with the Warriors for the second time having worked at Sixways during the 2006-07 season.
