About this deal

I actually went back and watched it again last week, great cast and inspiring message, especially now. There are tons of quotes about how “love is life” and how “it’s only through our flaws that we can truly appreciate humankind. Their talk of taking over the planet when they became too numerous, and just killing people outright made me think that they weren't a good society for all their superiority.

It would definitely have a major impact on encryption and computer security, but so will quantum computing. The part about learning the language in 100 words was completely unrealistic to me, no matter how advanced your innate language ability is, even if computer-aided.

The Diocese of Gloucester is looking for two creative, flexible and holistic thinkers who care passionately about nurturing leaders who will share the good news of Jesus Christ and make disciples in all our varied contexts.

Over the course of the novel, the narrator comes up with many possibilities about the “point” of love. The resolution with the assassin alien and him just burning his hand to kill his link was too simple of a resolution for me. Gots to be at least an 8 out o f12, Four Star read, Goddamn you Haig, no matter how hard I resist, I have to give you props. Some of Haig's work — especially part of the non-fiction books — is inspired by the mental breakdown he suffered from when he was 24-years-old.But yeah, I think some sci fi is trying to be predictive of the future and this book is not that, the proof is just a McGuffin for the books plot. This alien came with the basic knowledge that “humans are an arrogant species defined by violence and greed. The wonderfully witty opening pages introduce us to Professor Andrew Martin, a Cambridge University mathematician who has just solved the hitherto insoluble Riemann Hypothesis. Former Razorlight/We Are Scientists member Andy Burrows has created an album with best-selling author Matt Haig". That's why I'm skeptical of the premise (and yes, I'm aware that digging into this premise is to miss the point of the book, but I find it an interesting concept nonetheless).

When an extraterrestrial visitor arrives on Earth, his first impressions of the human species are less than positive. He hasn’t let the remarkable success that has come his way over the past five years go to his head – or indeed his toes. With its six chapters, each with its own set of penetrating questions, the book lends itself to a Lenten read. Tales of Connection (Van Ditmar, 2021), a selection of stories from Notes on a nervous planet, The comfort book and Reasons to stay alive. He followed it in 2018 with Notes on a Nervous Planet, which offered advice about remaining on an even keel in an increasingly fake and frenzied world. His mission is to kill anyone that might know about the mathematical equation but things don't go as planned. Although I did not hate the book there were too many aspects of the story that just annoyed me no end. And suddenly you realize not only is your family not normal but in fact populated by circus monkeys?

That is why so much that is beautiful on this planet has to do with time passing and the Earth turning. Stilted and strange though the alien's speech and behaviour continue to be, Martin's wife and teenage son spot hardly any difference from the original, save for some hilarious efforts to match the son's swearing and the suspicious way he bothers to put his used crockery in the dishwasher. He drinks wine, reads Emily Dickinson, listens to Talking Heads, and begins to bond with the family he lives with, in disguise. It seems like it was all just an excuse to make commentary on some ridiculous or outright wrong things we do as humans. If you took out all of the narrative aspects, The Humans could be seen as a collection of essays from a man pondering his own existence.A brilliant exploration of what it is to love, and to be human, The Humans is both heartwarming and hilarious, weird, and utterly wonderful.
