TCL TVs use a mix of Roku OS and Google TV, so the app store and channel lineup vary depending on which model you get. Roku-powered TVs give you access to the Roku Channel Store, offering a good selection of streaming channels. However, it’s a remote – and it does what a remote needs to do. There are buttons for Netflix, Spotify, Rakuten TV and Apple TV, which replaces Google Movies in light of Roku’s continuing tiff with the tech giant. It's a clear upgrade on previous TCL TVs, with a QLED 4K screen — very strong for the budget range. The picture is boosted by Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and other HD formats, which optimises colour and contrast. You do have to bear in the mind, however, that it is ultimately a budget set. It's good but it doesn't compete with more expensive options.But at a fraction of the price, the difference is marginal in the grand scheme of things. We’re reviewing the RP602K, TCL Roku’s 4K HDR Dolby Vision TV. Like the Hisense Roku TVs, this set is aimed at budget buyers whose priority is value over outright performance, with the addition of Dolby Vision HDR metadata providing it a boost over standard HDR content. Like every other TV on this list, it runs the Google TV interface with a huge selection of streaming apps. It also has an inadequate viewing angle, making it a poor choice for a wide seating arrangement. It's not a bad TV for gaming; its response time is okay, although it's worse in dark scenes, so it's not a great TV for fans of horror games. However, the TV's input lag performance is tremendous, leading to an extremely responsive gaming experience.

This is the refresh rate — how many times the screen refreshes per minute. The higher the refresh rate the smoother the handling of motion and gameplay is. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X pumping out games at 120fps, you want a 4K TV that can handle that with 120Hz. Thankfully, most do. You’ll also find some TVs equipped with VRR. This means Variable Refresh Rate, which keeps pace with sudden changes in a game’s fps output to prevent stuttering within gameplay. What is the best gaming TV? The out-of-box settings needs tweaking, and if you’re not interested or au fait with this side of TV set-up, you may not like the image the TCL initially offers. To fit a number of entertainment centers, the 5-Series is available in four sizes: 50 inches, 55 inches, 65 inches and 75 inches. We were sent the 50-inch model for review, but outside of the number of dimming zones, the specs and features remain the same. For gamers, a responsive TV is just as important as one with a good picture. With HDMI 2.0, and ALLM, you'll experience lowest latency and the best picture settings for gaming, automatically. Probably the biggest flaw of the design, however, is the IR remote that ships with the TV. Without built-in Bluetooth connectivity, there’s no way to use it for voice searches and it always requires line of sight to the IR receiver located on the bottom edge of the TV.The TCL 5-Series (S535) is priced on the lower end of mid-range, but it certainly doesn’t look like it. With a minimal bezel and metallic frame, the 5-Series should look modern and sleek in any living room. There’s support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, if you’re in the iOS ecosystem and want to either share video/audio content or add the TV to your list of smart devices. Alexa and Google digital assistants are covered but support isn’t native – you’ll need an external device to get either of them going. The TCL 5-Series S535 uses Roku TV, an egalitarian smart TV platform that has a fair and robust search feature and most of the major streaming apps.

Connectivity-wise, the TCL Roku boasts an extra HDMI input over the Hisense Roku, which is handy if you’re someone with plenty of sources. Connections tally at 4 x HDMI 2.0, 3.5mm audio out, CI+ slot, a DVB-T2/T UK tuner, USB, optical out and LAN. HDMI-CEC (or T-Link) only seems to cover soundbars. It's also a stellar gaming TV with extremely low input lag in Game Mode. It supports HDMI 2.1 bandwidth on two ports, although its first port can output up to 4k @ 144Hz, while its second is limited to 4k @ 120Hz. Still, this TV can take full advantage of 4k @ 120Hz gaming on newer consoles. For PC gamers, the TV has issues outputting anything above 120Hz when connected to an NVIDIA graphics card, so it's better suited for PCs with AMD GPUs. Otherwise, the TV supports every variable refresh rate (VRR) technology for nearly tear-free gaming from any source. Finally, it runs Google's popular Google TV OS, which is very easy to use and has many apps. Replaced the older TCL 5 Series/S555 2022 QLED, TCL 4 Series/S455 2022, and TCL 40S325 with the newer TCL Q7/Q750G QLED, TCL Q6/Q650G QLED, and TCL S4/S450G, respectively. Also refreshed the text in the smart features section, as all 2023 TCL TVs use Google TV for their smart interface.What it is interested in is clarity and accessibility. I doubt you’ll ever be confused by either the simple layout or how to navigate it. The ease of use of the Roku OS is perfectly suited for its prospective audience. While watching movies, with Dolby Audio technology, the crystal clarity function and sound spatialization give you sharper, more nuanced sound with great detail and richness for more realistic entertainment. TCL is one of the more budget-friendly brands on the market, and their TVs offer great value for their cost. Their prices have been going up, however. Dual-stand configuration makes it accessible for different areas, and its minimalist design and slim aesthetic are neat. Give it content filled with vibrant colours, though, and it can spring into life: the reds, yellows, neon blues, pinks and greens of Lamentis-1 in the Loki TV series make for an attractive image.
