About this deal

Personally, I never carry a gas canister bigger than 8 oz. as I will rarely be on a trekking trip that requires more than that. WindBurner pots must be used only with WindBurner stoves. This is because the pot and stove are specifically engineered to create an integrated system. Like all of the small canister stoves, the Deluxe boasts some basic design features that make it easy to set up. It gets extra points for a large control valve wire and simple fold-out pot supports that lend more stability than you'd expect — though it's still not as stable as the competition. With the PR D, whilst I think it would be foolish to not to take any other form of lighter, so far I haven't needed one - and that's impressive.

Watch your sleeves when lighting your stove. Thin material, especially that of wind shirts, is quite susceptible to melting if it comes anywhere close to a flame. Before lighting, screw your stove onto your gas canister all the way (read the directions). Turn your gas valve. Then use your lighter to gently and carefully hold a flame to the gas until it lights. Read the instructions that come with your camping stove before doing this. On average, the stover offers 60 minutes (with an 8 oz. canister MSR IsoPro) of burn time. 1 hour of use per canister may not seem like much, but consider that the majority of things you need to prepare only require you to boil water (which take a little over three minutes per liter.) If you are cooking elaborate meals, you will obviously blaze through your fuel at a faster clip.

The tool carefully punctures empty isobutane fuel canisters. It releases any remaining fumes into the air (make sure to do this process outside and somewhere well-ventilated). Alternatively, you could use a hammer and screwdriver, but the canister tool is easier to use. Most quality outdoor gear is outrageously expensive. I have spent the better part of the last ten years slowly accumulating the best gear that I can afford. It is always a good idea to invest in quality gear because 1. quality gear typically lasts longer and 2. it always performs at a higher level when you need it to. But a well-designed pressure regulator helps the stove manage those adverse factors so that you experience more consistently fast boil times. This means that on warm days, colder evenings and everything in between, you’ll enjoy a fast, hot meal. On both measures, amount of fuel used and the time to reach boil, the PRD performed just slightly better on average. For the PRD, the average boil time as 2:51 using 11.6 grams of fuel. The Windmaster average boil time was 2:55 using 12 grams of fuel.

Best for: Ultralight travel during a wide range of seasonal conditions, including colder conditions Another aspect where the Jetboil Stash excels is the ability to fit both the fuel canister and the stove base into the pot. This was a feature we liked with the Jetboil MiniMo, but it works much better on the Stash. In fact, when you buy the Stash, it comes with an empty fuel can-shaped trinket case just to show off how well everything fits together in the pot. Esbit stoves also have arguably the lightest weight fuel requirement and most efficiency per 1 L per burn. However, an Esbit stove can be difficult to light and often have a fishy odor. Additionally, solid fuel tablets can be difficult to find and take much longer to boil water than a gas stove. For a while, solid fuel stoves were allowed on Forest Service and Park Service land even when alcohol stoves were banned. Now that the loophole has been closed, I’m less enamored with Esbit stoves. Additionally, as fuel canister stove technology has gotten more efficient in burn time and weight, there are fewer reasons to use Esbit stoves. ALCOHOL STOVEPlease note that inflatables such as sleeping mats are not considered as faulty if they become punctured during use and are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty in this event. Here is my advice: if you are a long-distance, bear-bones dirtbag (no offense, that’s the term) hiker really counting ounces, the Snowpeak Litemax could be the right choice. I say that only from the perspective of weight. I can attest from experience that every single gram is counted when you are trekking hundreds or thousands of miles at a time.

The major upside — and downside — of the WindMaster is that it comes with a detachable pot support. Some municipal recycling centers can accept a crushed isobutane canister, but not a full fuel canister. This is their way of making sure that they are getting relatively clean metal instead of an exploding fuel can. Thus, it is essential to crush gas canisters before recycling. Unregulated canister stoves often suffer when the temperatures drop and/or you have low fuel in your canister. There are pros and cons to each approach and my goal in this section has mostly been to just point how how different these stoves are, not necessarily to suggest that any one of the design features is better than the other. So, I will simply highlight here how the designs may affect usability and you can determine from there if you think it matters to how you think you will use the stove. I repeated these tests a couple of more times using another pot (part of another test to be published later) and confirmed similar results. The tests of the Soto yielded an average time to boil of 2:43 using 9.5g of fuel vs the PRD with an average time of 2:34 using 8.875g. So, fairly consistently the PRD would just edge out the Soto Windmaster. I did also observe that as the canister approached empty the Soto Windmaster had sooner and more apparent drop in pressure than the PRD. I don’t have data to share on this point yet; this will require some further testing and analysis. I will ultimately also want to test both stoves in a more controlled environment (indoors), with zero wind, and with a regular and controlled wind. Conclusions Warning: Reading this article is not a substitute for reading the directions! You’re responsible for your own safety so PLEASE read the instructions on your stove before use.
