This is what threw me, because I couldn't decide if the familiar/jokey tone helped or hurt the book, because it wasn't what I was expecting. While working as a teacher, she began writing books aimed at young adults and became successful enough to leave her job. M. I learnt a lot about trans women and the LGBTQ+ community and it made me realize I don't really read/listen/watch many things related to the LGBTQ+ community and has made me interested to find more cultural things. This book is part memoir and part commentary and discussion of popular culture, societal norms and how society views sexuality, sex, gender, women’s rights, transphobia, intersectional feminism and more.I was on top of my drinking and I never cut myself, but throughout my 20s I engaged in these awful relationships. I also hope that those of us who are cis find these sorts of books too and we can understand more about the journey so we don't demean or undermine people's lived experiences. It's also written in a very colloquial, humorous style that is very much not the norm for these kinds of books.

I certainly became much more aware after having multiple trans friends, online and off, because if someone you care about cares about something, the natural impulse is for you to care, too, and to be informed. Before our names, before we have likes and dislikes – before we, or anyone else, have any idea who we are. It seems highly conceivable that one day Dawson’s own work will act as just this kind of cultural fodder for teenagers’ allusive imaginations; perhaps it already is. Her mother worked for the Bradford and Bingley building society while her father was a travelling salesman for Cadbury. The audiobook was very well done and it helped hear her read it as to not read and intonation that was not intended into it. I should start this off by saying that I am a cisgender, straight woman, and that this is the first book (outside of university course) that I have read about gender.

Part of the ground breaking and important 'And Other Big Questions' series, which offers balanced and considered views on the big issues we face in the world we live in today. The story feels its way around the differences between the male and female orgasm, and is unflinching in its approach to date rape – the bewildering moment when consent is breached. The voice in these works is not unlike that of an agony aunt, or rather a cool and queer older sibling literate both in the numerous issues that surround growing up LGBTQ+ as well as the lingo and speech patterns that make such insights accessible to a young readership. What I liked about this book is that it's not just the personal story of Juno, but also her discovery of Feminism, Identity, Gender and much more. British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries that meet internationally accepted standards. Without wishing to sound a Nelly Know All, the book didn't really tell me anything new, but people grappling with their own gender identity, or those with an interest but little knowledge, will probably find it interesting.

Re-read March 2023 - on a re-read, the writing here presents as a little immature, almost as though the book is aimed at the YA market, which is great as Juno's experience is such a great learning resource for young adults. So, overall, I think this is a good book to read to get an idea of the arguments trans activists are making, but actually has far more information on Dawson’s life as a young gay man before transitioning than anything to do with gender.

Many of her books have been concerned with the social issues affecting young adults today, including Being a Boy (2013), on the subject of puberty, This Book is Gay (2014), on being young and LGBTQ+, and Mind Your Head (2016), a guide to mental health for young people. In 2022, it was listed among 52 books banned by the Alpine School District following the implementation of Utah law H. Even Dawson’s memoir, The Gender Games (2017), her first aimed at adults, possesses ‘a breezy, confident style [that] can seem aimed at teenagers’ in the words of trans poet and scholar Steph Burt (‘Trans 101’, Times Literary Supplement.
