About this deal

I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this book as it’s a five star from what I have read so far.

I’ve had the same old Nokia phone for years and years and have never bothered with social media and the like. We join Mary on her life journey through 75 years of social change, marked by moments such as the World Cup, Charles and Diana’s wedding and Covid-19. I mean, if you don’t have tears in your eyes from laughing when Bob claims that he does his own dentistry, then you’re doing it wrong. So many comedians have published novels this year that I have begun to wonder whether writing one is an assignment in a yet-to-be-broadcast episode of Taskmaster. Much loved comedian, actor and tv presenter Bob Mortimer, has now turned his talents to writing a mystery novel. In July 2002, Mortimer fought and defeated Les Dennis in the BBC's first Celebrity Boxing match, as part of Sport Relief 2002. The latter is an acquaintance of Gary’s who runs out on him one night in the pub, leaving behind a USB stick in the shape of a corncob and is later reported dead under suspicious circumstances. The show became successful in South London and eventually outgrew Goldsmith's Tavern, moving in 1988 to the Albany Empire in Deptford. I did make a good connection with a girl, but that blew up in my face and smacked my arse with a fish slice. Almost abandoned as Bob struggled with the narration initially, but I realised I had a bit of a silly grin on my face so persevered.

Happily, The Satsuma Complex doesn’t feel like a rush job to capitalise on the bestselling exploits of its author’s peers. The comedian first revealed that he was writing a second novel in May, following the success of his debut The Satsuma Complex. The much loved comic proves adept at noirish fiction in a debut whose surrealist humour sets it apart . Mortimer began to perform on the show, which was christened Vic Reeves Big Night Out, creating such characters as the Singing Lawyer, Graham Lister, Judge Nutmeg and the Man With the Stick.

Bob Mortimer is the latest celebrity to follow a bestselling memoir with fiction, in this case a crime novel set in drab south-east London. Such humour isn’t everyone’s bag but I think there is enough promise in these first couple of chapters to bring enjoyment to all readers that pick up this original book. And although I can’t imagine non-fans emerging anything other than baffled, those who are used to his brand of weirdness will find that the book works well as a thriller, too. You can be forgiven that there’s something not quite right about Gary, after all, he gets a lot of his inner monologue advice from the local squirrels but he is ultimately a well-meaning solicitor who’s just trying to get by. Cerys Matthews is a long-time fan of Dylan Thomas, having composed music for his poetry in the past.

He told Kathy Burke on her Where There's A Will, There's A Wake podcast, that he would not be reviving his semi-autobiographical, disaffected legal assistant character Gary Thorn from the first novel. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. The episode remained true to the classic Big Night Out formula and was composed of various comedy songs, skits, characters and sketches. Despite my reticence from reading some poor reviews, I really loved reading about Gary in The Satsuma Complex. This is a funny, sad, at times fairly predictable but nonetheless very entertaining crime novel with a good dollop of love and the inevitable Bob Mortimer absurdisms peppered throughout. The story is "about a bloke who's wife leaves him but maybe she's been taken, he's got to find out" Mortimer told The One Show.

To describe me as anonymous would be unfair, but to notice me other than in passing would be a rarity. Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer: 'There was the chance one of us might drop dead on the riverbank' ". I found the humour a little forced, which is odd because I normally love Bob’s spontaneity, however it did finish with a need to know more, so after the 2 chapter taster I’ll reserve judgment for now, but would be keen to read more. Just three hilarious elements of The Satsuma Complex – a surprisingly serious debut novel from Would I Lie To You? Gary and his crabby neighbour Grace – who suspects that the detectives who’ve informed him of Brendan’s death may not be police officers at all – team up as an investigative odd couple, and the plot thickens.Robert Renwick Mortimer (born 23 May 1959) is an English comedian, author, television presenter and actor. Characters range from Organ Morgan sleeping on his organ to Farmer Watkins dancing on the hill, and are accompanied by Kate Evans’ captivating and slightly absurd illustrations. In April 2010, Mortimer appeared on the Sky1 panel show A League of Their Own, on Andrew Flintoff's team.
